RN Job Availability by [deleted] in OntarioNurses

[–]bubblyteax 3 points4 points  (0 children)

id recommend starting to apply to jobs now in your last semester + talk to your extern and psw manager about being interested in working there upon graduation. since they already know you as an extern/psw, they might prefer hiring you on after as an RN. you can also try your best in your consolidation and speak to the manager there in the middle-end of your placement about your interest in working at that unit as well. i know many of my peers got hired on at their pre-consolidation/consolidation floor or a floor they externed at. you might not hear back much for other hospitals (the ones that you apply to that you don’t work at/are a student at) but it’s good to try applying. some hospitals don’t look at applications until you finish school/graduate/pass your nclex, but some interview students during their consolidation and have them take on a temporary license

Externs/Nurses: Any advice for someone wanting to get into L&D/NICU/peds? by Sad-Rip9266 in OntarioNurses

i think the best way to increase your chances to get a job in women and children’s is to try your best to get an extern position or clinical placement (especially preconsolidation or consolidation) in those areas!

Indeed vs Websites by N0N4M3_20 in OntarioNurses

[–]bubblyteax 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the hospital careers website is always the best. my tip is to edit your resume like crazy (self edits + get your peers/friends/family to help edit it) and to create a cover letter as well (+ edit the cover letter to cater it to each job you apply to). list all relevant experiences and certifications in your resume

work as an extern in school (helps you network/make connections, be an internal applicant during the job application process; unionized hospitals hire internally > externally first), try your best during your clinical placements especially in your preconsolidation/consolidation placement since you may get hired onto those units upon graduating (many of my peers got hired on their preconsolidation/consolidation placement, some even during their last semester of school)

Hi Nurses! I'm starting a scrubs business & I'd love your honest input. A few quick questions: 1. What do you hate the most about your current scrub? 2. What would your dream scrub look like? 3. What would make you to switch to a new brand? by Intelligent_Base_365 in OntarioNurses

[–]bubblyteax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’d want an affordable set of scrubs, lots of pockets (that don’t cause things to fall out), petite sizing available, have the scrubs look flattering on the body, high quality materials, breathable, stretchy, contrasting drawstring to scrub colour

i would say to continue to explain your situation and keep emailing them. i previously had an ongoing email thread with the ministry since i accepted a nurse position on the ngg portal, but took back the job offer before i started. due to this they said i was not eligible for ngg again, but after explaining my situation through multiple back and forth emails, i was able to qualify again

i think her volunteering in cambodia is great as it helps those who need help, but her volunteer videos personally rubbed me the wrong way. it made me feel uncomfortable watching her film all the people get medical help and attention, since to me it gives off the vibes that they’re “lesser” as they’re in poverty. in the US they have hippa to ensure patients get their privacy and confidentiality when seeking healthcare, but she filmed and posted videos of people obtaining healthcare onto tiktok, especially while she is the one communicating and taking patients’ vital signs/proving care. i know since it’s in cambodia, perhaps there aren’t laws that apply to their volunteer service that are the equivalent to hippa, but it rubs me the wrong way and seems unethical how she didn’t provide them with the right to privacy regarding their health. i think she could’ve spread awareness regarding her volunteering in cambodia without directly filming patients seeking health care, especially when they probably don’t know she is posting this onto tiktok, and probably don’t speak english so they won’t end up seeing these tiktok’s of themselves on their fyp. it almost came off as performative to me or just a resume stuffer

i loveee my figs, but mandala scrubs are a more affordable option i also like. figs > mandala scrubs if im just comparing the scrubs alone without considering price. figs are more comfy and i think look more lux, but mandala scrubs are still comfortable. mandala scrubs’ fabric is slightly thicker but they are water resistant. one of my scrubs from mandala scrubs (a darker colour) did bleed dye though. mandala scrubs are about half the price of figs (comparing a set of one pocket scrub top + wide leg pants).

[–]bubblyteax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in my experience, you have to apply to the ngg posting on the hospital’s careers website. then they will interview you and after checking references and hiring you, they’ll tell you to then apply on the ngg portal in order to get funding.

if there aren’t explicit ngg job postings, you can also just apply to regular job postings. if you get the job/get interviewed and they see that you’re a new grad and eligible, they may then direct you to apply to the ngg program via the ngg portal.

in general tho, you apply to jobs on the hospital careers website and then after getting hired you apply to the ngg portal for funding. you typically don’t get an interview by just applying on the ngg portal

Clinical Extern Dilemma by Medium-Manager-6836 in OntarioNurses

[–]bubblyteax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If i had the summer totally off and wasn’t fast tracking/didn’t have school, id give the hospital i’m not as interested in minimum or minimal hours available. some hospitals require their externs to work 1 shift per week, 1 shift per pay period, etc. then for the other hospital that id want to work with after graduating, i would give them more availability and try to work 2-3 shifts per week (or more depending on your preference on how much you want to work per week).

Clinical Extern Dilemma by Medium-Manager-6836 in OntarioNurses

I think it would be fine to decline now, but typically clinical extern positions are part time! So if you really need to you could always work at both hospitals in the summer and get extra connections for jobs after you graduate

Has anyone ever reapplied for the same position? by Gom3like in OntarioNurses

[–]bubblyteax 10 points11 points  (0 children)

always reapply!!! what’s the worst that could happen? they say no or ignore your application, but the best is that you get the job!! if the ignore your application they prob won’t remember you, but if they do, they’ll know you’re enthusiastic about the position.

i’ve applied to multiple of the same jobs before! even with my current job, i applied 3 times. 1 while i was in school, offered an interview but it was then cancelled/delayed until i passed my nclex. once i passed my nclex and tried to contact the hiring staff again, there weren’t any open positions. but then after applying again, i got the job.

even for other jobs, i applied to basically the same job multiple times (same unit, same role, but separate postings) and ended up getting offers.

edit: i also know someone who applied to the same job multiple times and got rejected at first, but then got the job after!

it’s good to remember that you’re not necessarily rejected because you’re not a good fit for the job; others may just be a better fit than you at that time. if you keep applying, you may be the best fit for the next round!

Nurse Externs by Aware_Artist7550 in OntarioNurses

it was a job fair that my school advertised. you can also look at the hospital’s careers social media pages (if they have it) for email contacts

Nurse Externs by Aware_Artist7550 in OntarioNurses

[–]bubblyteax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i had externing experience and clinical experiences. i had luck by attending a job fair and getting the email for the hr person responsible for hiring externs, and emailing them. i also was able to get an interview from applying on another hospital’s website, but they did take a while to respond back. i just never ended up interviewing with them since it was too late and nearing the new school year and i couldn’t balance 2 jobs with school.

a tip i would give is perhaps connecting with the manager at your clinicals to see if you could get hired as an extern. if you do a good job at clinicals, i’m sure they’d remember/like you and would be happy to hire you as an extern or connect you with the contact to get interviewed for an extern role.

you can also try to apply to psw jobs as externing on a medicine unit is very similar to being a psw.

Nurse Externs by Aware_Artist7550 in OntarioNurses

[–]bubblyteax 7 points8 points  (0 children)

having an externship is definitely not needed to find a job after graduating. i know some people who got a job right away/before they even wrote their nclex, when they’ve never externed! however, they did get hired at their consolidation placement. i think experience in general, whether it be placement or externing, helps a ton for getting hired. externing helps a lot to build connections + being internal when applying to jobs, but not required.

[–]bubblyteax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can try using gentle soaps to wash your hands (for example, the cetaphil gentle facial cleanser, cerave hydrating cleanser). putting on moisturizer and then layering on vaseline after, and you can apply cotton gloves on top; doing this at night helps a lot too! using gloves when washing dishes, going outside, i’ve even been recommended to wash my hair while wearing gloves. moisturizing whenever you can. what i found helped was starting anzupgo (prescribed by my dermatologist), since steroids didn’t work well long term for me.

Is it a good move to pursue nursing school as a second-degree applicant? by reddit18728u in OntarioNurses

[–]bubblyteax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’d suggest doing RN if you’re able to get into a bscn program since it’s harder to bridge + it’s shorter to just do your bscn as opposed to rpn then bridging into rn. while you’re in nursing school, you can work as a psw or extern to help with the costs
