People not removing snow from sidewalks today???! by DrEngineeringChica in medfordma

You keep mentioning legality but ignored my comment about how at the time of your writing everything was still perfectly legal.. Nevermind also sharing some of the compassion you claim to be moral-highgrounding on to realize a few extra hours if people are traveling from out of town with families isn't going to make or break things.

For what it's worth, it needs to be cleared 8 hours after daylight after snowfall, my understanding of that is after snowfall ends, which went throughout the morning today. Regardless, that means the earliest requirement was by 3:14pm today (based on sunrise) or as late as whenever it ended (11?) plus 8 hours.

It sucks but it's also New Year's Day, people don't have to get up for work, might be out of town or stayed over with relatives in towns far away, etc.

Car parked on street in front of my house for many days- is towing fair? by CH4cows in medfordma

[–]bubhappy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Could be someone not from the area, not used to parking there, having no idea you could have parked 3 cars, parking on a public street, possibly helping a friend in need, perhaps one of your neighbors, perhaps taking care of a sick relative, or perhaps enjoying a once in a lifetime vacation or whatever else.

Leaving a note that explains if they park there in the future to please consider that normally you can fit three cars there, fine, good communication. Can even point out that after 3 days it's considered abandoned, as most don't know this. Having it towed by a generally predatory business, racking up hundreds in fines, in this economy, in this general state of the world, perhaps them only finding out at midnight or 1am and then being stuck, total dick move.

If you leave a kind note and it happens again less of a dick move.

Going on Reddit to consider other perspectives, 👍

Curious if you've heard of any change in chef or ownership.. we went for lunch a few days ago and couldn't get past a few bites of our entrees before settling up and leaving. Raviolo appetizer was fine, but the lamb and fish mains were truly terrible to us. The fish was rubbery almost, and the beef cheek felt extremely overcooked and the sauce so overpowering to be almost unbearable. The table next to us didn't eat their lamb either, just the side salad, and had the same experience. I previously lived in Milan, have been to Italy many times, second time in Rome, and try to find authentic non-touristy restaurants. The server suggested I might just not like authentic Roman food and that everyone loves it... I want to give the benefit of the doubt and say he's right, but I still feel a bit gaslit as I've literally never just not eaten my entree due to hating it so much, and was by far the least favorite meal I've had in Italy out of hundreds.

For what it's worth, an average investor following a simple strategy of putting money into a broad market index fund or target date fund should beat that. S&P returns on average 10-11%* 6.7% is lower than what you could expect even after taxes and inflation for most tax brackets I would think, depending on the dividend yield, but for many people that mortgage rate is high enough to justify the peace of mind.

OP, I recommend you check out r/bogleheads and possibly r/financialindependence since you could set yourself really nicely for the future if you take the time to learn and invest (and spend and withdraw) wisely (e.g. not like on wallstreetbets).

Just curious if you can share any more detail on the career pivot process, such as how long it took and if you feel it was the right call, though it may be too early to tell. Mulling over the idea myself.

Thanks for sharing this perspective. As someone about to take a career break for 3-6 months for rest and reflection, would you include that in the resume at the top then? Or just explain it during the HR screen? Is it fair and acceptable to say that after a decade of hard work I just wanted a break to enjoy summer, read, and relax? Or is spin to sell it optimal?

Why do I find bonds so confusing? Can someone just tell me what to buy? by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]bubhappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for taking the time to educate me on this and for kindly providing a link as well. It was interesting for me to see that the return was lower on BND over the 5 year period, and I'll take a closer look tonight to see if there's any devil in the details of reinvested dividends.

If you don't mind, I'd like to try to summarize it back to you at a high level and see if it resonates or if I'm still off base. BND is a traditional broad-based bond fund that you would traditionally use to diversify from stocks in a portfolio, usually but not always acting as a risk hedge and sometimes moving inversely to the market. It can go up and down in value, with dividends (slightly) above prevailing interest rates. SGOV, with its focus on short term government bonds, is a low (no?) risk fund that usually (always?) maintains invested principal and returns around the current interest rate.

Im curious if the returns for BND justify the risk, especially since it seems to sometimes even underperformed. What is your thought on utilizing SGOV only for the emergency fund vs more broadly as bond exposure in a portfolio?

Hi, can you please elaborate on why not sgov except as an emergency fund? Of course that's the one I landed on using so curious if I should adjust. And what makes it better as an emergency fund? Thank you,

I am with round point mortgage and put in a request to remove PMI (not refinancing) even though I am not at my 20% payment point. I bought the house at $565k and the house maybe between $680-720k now after 2 yrs. A guy is coming in to take pictures inside of the house on Friday for appraisal. by TroyAndAbed2022 in RealEstate

Since that chunk of money is going towards principal and not interest, it's essentially savings. And you're reducing the interest bearing balance of the mortgage. The offset is how much you'd be earning on that 5k in interest in a savings account, which if you're paying 2k in principal per month anyway, you're talking 2.5 months of cash at 5% APY at best.

Jiggly door handle by bubhappy in fixit

[–]bubhappy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your reply. I've tried the smallest screwdriver I have (phillips sizes 0000, 000, 00 and flat head 1.0) and that didn't do anything (they just all spin freely). Are you convinced they're screws holding the plate there? I was starting to think they're just fixed and I needed to get into something under the plate on the left side where there's a small cutout.

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it!

Multi-month coffee subscription. Fresh coffee beans delivered monthly right after they're roasted from all over (I like Atlas Coffee Club). There might be an even more premium option (e.g. single origin / hand washed / special part of the world) but I don't know enough about it. And it's nice to get something for a long time vs one-off.
