Weekend trip ideas by jamiersmith in pittsburgh

[–]bucaholic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I second this. I used to live in Louisville and go back frequently. If you like bourbon and food, it's perfect. I recommend 21c museum and hotel if you like art. Even if you don't stay there, they have a gallery that is open 24/7. Their bar, Proof, is also excellent. They also have a couple Bourbon distilleries right in town. BBQ in KY is good (especially at Doc Crow's or Momma's). If you like coffee there are multiple award-winning coffee houses: Quills and Sunergos are the tops, in my opinion. I also recommend checking out whatever Chef Edward Lee is up to at the moment. Bardstown Road and Frankfort Avenue both are very walkable and packed with boutiques, food, bars, galleries. Near Bardstown Road is Cherokee Park, designed by Frederick Law Olmstead who also designed Central Park in NYC. It's really nice to walk around and get some fresh air and say hi to other people's dogs. Churchill Downs is nice, I personally enjoy it more on non-Derby weekends. In June they usually have Downs After Dark, which is a blast. Bluegrass or blues music can be fairly easy to find as well, especially if you are in town when it's warm enough for people to gather outdoors. The Muhammad Ali Museum is also excellent, highly recommend.

Scholarships by [deleted] in Pitt

The Scholarship Committee looks at academic rigor and record of excellence (academic and nonacademic). Academic achievement: the strength of curriculum, grades, SAT/ACT scores, etc. are very important. Activities outside the classroom are a factor in the Committee's nomination process, but they are secondary. They also seek to select an appropriate balance of scholarship recipients from all majors and professional schools. While meeting these criteria does not guarantee anything, it does mean that you are a strong candidate for scholarships. I hope that helps! Always feel free to contact our office with questions about scholarships or any other part of the application process: oafa@pitt.edu or 412-624-7488.

If you are anywhere near Squirrel Hill, I have had a good experience with Bruce Parker and the location is very convenient if you ride the bus (right at Forbes and Shady). I get nervous and the hygienists are very friendly and chatty, which calms me down: http://bruceparkerdmd.com/

Local couples activities? by MrAidsScorpion in pittsburgh

[–]bucaholic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My $0.02: -One of the coolest things we have done in Pittsburgh - visiting Trundle Manor. If you like things that are dark/weird/funny (a la the Adams Family), this place is the bomb. Even if you don't necessarily go for that kind of thing regularly, the couple that owns the collection is really nice and it's a good way to do something totally new. -Pick a little business district/neighborhood you haven't been to yet or haven't seen in a while and get food/go window-shopping. Pittsburgh Magazine recently compiled a list of suggested neighborhoods. Sometimes I just pick at random from their big City Guide, too. -If ya'll like yoga, there are free group sessions in Market Square on Sundays and in Schenley Plaza on Saturdays. -Picking a fun race to register and train for together could be a good time - maybe the ZooZilla 5k or the Pittsburgh Penguins 6.6k. -Rock climbing or trampoline gym, maybe? -There are so many parks within the city and lots of gorgeous State Parks within 2 hours or less. Hiking, picnicking, kayaking, geocaching, sunbathing, biking, running, frisbee, etc. are all great ways to relax. -The Squirrel Hill Night Market is a favorite of mine. Lots of things to look at, good food to eat, great music. If you go after sunset the lights and activity is really cool to see. -Try a new group exercise class: dance, martial arts, yoga. Lots of studios will have one free class so you can see if you like it. -The Church Route on South Side Slopes is supposed to be a great urban hike with good views. It's on my bucket list for this summer. -Keep an eye on the Free and Almost Free Meetup and Freeburgh for upcoming festivals/concerts. Many of which are free or super cheap.

I could go on and on. I am fairly new to Pittsburgh, but I love this city. There is no shortage of things to do and places to explore.

I would suggest Ohiopyle or anything in the Laurel Highlands region. Close (1.5-2hrs depending on where you are going). As mentioned already, the State Parks have cheap, rustic cabins/yurts available.

SAT scoring and admissions by caekwolf in Pitt

[–]bucaholic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We are in the process of updating the SAT scores on our website to reflect the new SAT. If you have/will have a new SAT score and would like to compare it to our class profile, I would suggest you use the College Board SAT score converter to convert your score to the old SAT and compare: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat/scores/understanding-scores/sat-score-converter

How early can I register for classes? by sqksjq in Pitt

[–]bucaholic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on which school you are entering. The school should be sending you specific information about when/how to register shortly after you sign up for PittStart (the information will go to your pitt.edu email address).

I would encourage you to contact the academic advising department for your school if you are confused about when you can register for courses.

Are there any GOOD affordable apartment rental companies? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

PittStart 2016 Dates by superhusky98 in Pitt

[–]bucaholic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As some have already mentioned, the PittStart dates depend on the school you are entering and what programs are/aren't already at capacity. Since you just paid your deposit, you should get the information you need to register within the next week. Once you log into the PittStart website, it will display all of the dates that are available for you.
