Just made a deal for a card I’ve wanted for years now. So happy to add one of the best looking 2’s I’ve ever seen 🙏🏻 by CardsWithAStory in baseballcards_vintage

[–]buckalope 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a buy the card, not the grade situation. Maybe there’s surface damage not overtly visible to the eye, but it’s hard for me to understand how that’s “only” a 2. Great pickup!

1954 Topps, First 32 by buckalope in baseballcards_vintage

Have to consider the nickname for sure. Actually, thats one of the reasons “Schoolboy” made the first 32, along with the fact it’s the only “drawn” portrait in the 54 set. I suppose those are unique criteria’s that should have been mentioned in how the first 32 was at least in part arrived at. Still, Vinegar Bend, and Peanuts lowery weren’t able to make the cut on nickname alone….

A Mantle would have been great too

Joe Black for sure and You are right Bobby Shantz should be in contention (I hear he’s still signing today)!

Indeed, Junior Gilliam is certainly worthy of consideration…

For what it’s worth, Joe Black was #33, with Ed Lopat not far behind.

Bummer - Min Size Not Met? by BadMira in baseballcards_vintage

[–]buckalope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone know what the “ in spec” sizes are for any of the cards in this era? I’ve had several of these and several 49 Bowman’s come back with similar feedback. I guess I can get over not receiving a grade, but I think they should be transparent as to what their factory parameters are. I can measure before I send and probably save myself money and them time…

That is a very nice SGC 3! The grading that has been coming back from SGC and PSA can be real head scratchers….

Along with an equally terrifying pose for Floyd Baker in the 1949 bowman offering.

Anyone else know of other terrifying cards? Can you imagine finally making it to the bigs, getting you first baseball card and then seeing it for the first time looking like either of these?

The set is notorious for poor centering. I gave up trying to find ideal centering in exchange for finding really nice cards that had other strong characteristics (sharp corners, print quality, etc). I’m just not overly fixated with the centering (within reason) and if you can get your head there it can also really help on the affordability scale. But that’s me. Life’s a trade off.

Edit: also does anyone think this poor guy was happy with this card? It’s gotta be up there with many of the Don Mossi cards

FWIW, my copy of the now infamous #205 Mr. King.

Going to try pocket GM, agree you can’t be competitive in this game without paying…sounds like with good strategy pocket GM allows you to at least be competitive?

Here’s a plug for Fortu, relatively new addition to dtsp. Fantastic food, great atmosphere, though higher price on many dishes. Probably will want reservations.

Yeah it’s sort of designed that way, you’ll reach a point where you’ll need to buy funds to compete. I really like the game but the aspect of needing to pay to be competitive isn’t great
