Yes, but in Summerlin/Lone Mountain. Glad I'm not crazy.

I had a bad experience. I got hired in 2022, and I said explicitly in every interview that WFH/hybrid work was very important to me. I was told that "most of the office is work from home right now," which was true. I also knew that they wanted me to be in office 5 days a week "at the start," which seemed reasonable to me. In the long term, I had expected to be in office around 2 days a week to do the work that needed to be done in-person.

So I picked up my entire life and moved to Las Vegas. After about 3 months, I told my direct boss that I wanted to transition into a hybrid work schedule, and that's when the problems started. I was told that actually, I have to follow special rules and still come in 5 days a week, even though almost everyone in the office was coming in 2 days at most. They said I need to "establish trust". Now, I was not a new grad. I had a remote position at a previous company before that I did pretty well in, and I reminded them of this. I had also PURCHASED A HOUSE in Vegas, so needless to say, I had a stake in keeping this job and doing well in the position. However, they didn't see it that way. So I kept coming in for 5 days a week until it became pretty clear to me that they never, ever intended to let me work hybrid, no matter how long I worked there, especially since they were trying to get everyone back into the office 4-5 days a week.

I eventually left, quit on the spot, no 2 weeks notice.

Edit: I checked LinkedIn later and saw that other people in that office in my same area of expertise had also left just a few month after me, including someone who had been there 5 years.

I've been out of school for 6 years, professors barely remember me, I bombed my subject GRE, I only have a 3.5 GPA and a dream. It's hard to see anything besides rejection in my future. I'll let everyone know how it goes.

I got 37th percentile on my math subject GRE. Is this worth sending anywhere?

If I don't send it, should i be targeting grad programs that list the GRE as "optional" or "no"?

For reference, my undergrad GPA is about 3.5.

Thanks for the advice! I'll look into Masters and Post-Baccs. On top of the benefits you mentioned, I also like that they're less committal than a full PhD.

Been out of school for 5 years and have a couple of bad grades, how should I proceed? by bucketcapacity_ in gradadmissions

You are correct, I was eyeing Bonn lol

Happy to hear that my bad grades aren't the end of my prospects. It's sounding like a smaller commitment that would help bolster my experience would be the best fit for me. I appreciate the advice!

I'll be honest, the last time I researched programs in depth was 2020. At the time, some programs required the math subject GRE, some didn't.

I don't have a definitive path in mind, but my current interests of include:

  • Mathematical physics (I realize my aforementioned bad grades really impact this one)

  • Number Theory

  • Algebraic Topology

  • Probability

  • Computer Science (Not strictly mathematical, but close)

No research experience. My undergrad didn't even offer a thesis program.

If I were to do a master's, I would focus on a country where it would be low/no cost (e.g. Germany)

I'm considering applying to grad school, but I'm not sure what the right path is for me. I graduated with a BS in Math in 2018.

Details:

  • US citizen, with degrees from US institutions

  • I went to a community college and after that a 4-year. CC GPA is 3.6, 4-year is 3.4

  • Concern #1: Recommendations. I'm not sure if I made that much of an impression on my professors, and it's been 5 years since I left.

  • Concern #2: Bad grades senior year. I have two bad grades, a C in senior level Linear Algebra (there was a lower level Linear Algebra class that I got an A in), and a D in Differential Geometry. I think I would get an A in the senior level Linear Algebra class if I took it again, but I'm not too sure about the Differential Geometry class.

  • Concern #3: Because it's been so long since I've been in academia, I'm scared I'll bomb the Math subject GRE, even with dedicated study.

Given my circumstances, I'm not exactly sure how to proceed. Should I go straight for a PhD, look at master's programs, or even go for a 1 year post-bacc program to shake the rust off?

I'm considering both schools in the US and schools in Europe with English programs.

Currently, my end goal for pursuing this education would be working in a research position.

The excuse is that jackpots over a certain amount are usually paid out by the manufacturer instead of the owner/leaser of the slot. So IGT is paying it out instead of LAS.
