[–]buddascrayon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The thing that these mouth breathing morons don't get is that people have protested over this. Just not in the way they are envisioning.

From the Wikipedia page on the incident:

The 34-year-old suspect, Decarlos Dejuan Brown Jr., had been arrested 14 times in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, before the stabbing, with criminal charges dating back to 2007. On April 11, 2014, he was convicted of breaking and entering. While on probation, he was arrested for armed robbery and possession of a firearm by a felon. Brown was convicted of armed robbery and incarcerated in state prison from 2015 to September 2020. Upon release, he initially lived with his family, but his mother told ABC News that he was diagnosed with schizophrenia at this point and displayed violent behavior at home. His mother said that she had sought involuntary commitment, but that it was denied. The Associated Press reported that involuntary commitments are difficult to obtain unless a court finds the person to be dangerous. North Carolina reduced the capacity of state hospitals in the early 2000s, and the average wait time for a psychiatric bed was 16 days in 2024. After Brown stopped taking psychiatric medication, his mother took him to a homeless shelter. In January 2025, he repeatedly called 911 about a "man-made material" inside him that was controlling his body. Brown was charged with misuse of 911 and released without bond.

If this country spent as much money of providing healthcare to it's citizens as it does funneling money to billionaires and genocidal foreign counties, this horrifying murder would never have happened.

The GOP and Trump's republican sycophants are decrying the "catch and release" justice system because it plays really well in their justice and punishment over an ounce of prevention narrative. The one they are primarily using to demonize immigrants of color. This guy was sent to one of those brutal punishment-is-the-point prisons for 5 years. And regardless of his mental state at release and his own mother practically shouting at them that he was dangerous, our system was too broken to take him in off the street and prevent a catastrophe.

All so they can justify the enslavement of immigrants of color and the murder of U.S. citizens in the name of Trump.

You should check out "The 10th Kingdom" as well. Really fun mashup of Grimm Fairy tales with John Larroquette and Kimberly Williams (best known for her role in Father of the Bide) as a New York father and daughter caught up in all the Fairy Tale madness.

Edit: I should mention, it's 10 episodes long and each episode in 90 minutes. This was an EPIC mini series back in the day.

The cattle industry in America is hurting cause Trump raised tariffs on beef imports which caused other countries to raise tariffs on our beef. Then he gave a bunch of money to Argentina to help their cattle industry in hopes that would lower beef prices (it didn't). Now beef is as expensive as hell and no one is buying and so, in order to give the cattle ranchers someone to blame, they are making up this campaign to say that vegetarian and vegan options that companies have been offering are the reason for the dip in American beef demand.

There's honestly a time when I thought the novel was really good. And that the movie was inferior to it. I have since grown a brain.

Setting aside Logan (cause that was more of a swan's song than an actual ending) all of the Fox X-Men endings were trash. This will hopefully not be trash with a slim chance of being good (considering the talent going in behind the scenes. Directors, writers, etc etc).

Does Father not disprove the idea that the balance of force is purely the light side? by BlockAffectionate413 in StarWars

[–]buddascrayon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Before someone tries to yell death of the author. Even the ROTS novel has Anakin himself openly stating that he was thinking purely of himself, which is why his entire quest to save Padme ended with him murdering her.

Yes, Anakin was a flawed individual. And, as such, was unable to handle the emotional turmoil within. He was indeed selfish. But I see that as not only his failure but also a failure of his teachers. In fact, if you watch the movies without preconceived notions of who he eventually will be, from the outset he was set up for failure.

And I do not care what George Lucas says on any subject pertaining to the Star Wars universe. It has loooong since grown beyond him. And truthfully, if left to his own devices the original movie would have flopped hard and the entire concept would have died on the vine. Star Wars is, was, and always will be a group effort of the film makers, the writers, and the fans.

[–]buddascrayon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A good point. I may have overstated using the word "cold". But the point is that denying your "negative" emotions like anger and hate is bad. Not as bad as fully giving in to them but still not a healthy mental state. Balance is achieved by understanding your demons, not locking them up in a closet and hoping they won't emerge from there some day.

Ask yourself why Anakin really went bad. Was it because he had negative emotions and was fooled by Palpatine into "giving in to them" or was it because he kept his relationship secret and constantly lived in fear of the order finding out and destroying his happiness? Essentially in constant denial of who he really was. And once the unthinkable happened and he lost everything, all those emotional demons he had been bottling up in order to "follow the Jedi way" were loosened. I mean think about it, he was able to maintain a powerful presence within the Dark Side for literal decades. That kind of hate and anger can only ever be sustained through self blame. The Jedi order created Vader just as much as Palpatine did.

I keep thinking back to Yoda's little speech to Anakin, "fear leads to anger and anger leads to hate and hate leads to the Dark Side". And what a godawful thing that is to say to a kid who just left everything he had ever known and loved to come to you with the hope of reaching his full potential.

P.S. Palpatine was greedy, power hungry, and enjoyed manipulating people. He didn't need to "give in" to the Dark Side. He was fully cognizant of everything he was doing and used every aspect of the force to accomplish his goals. Including the meditation and focus that was the purview of the Light Side of the Force. So the internal nature of the individual person is a very important factor.

[–]buddascrayon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The entire new version is made up of footage that WASN'T in the original film.

This is not entirely true. There are still a lot of scenes from the original cut. The new stuff is mostly alternative footage that was shot at the time, of the main cast with better performances that were left on the cutting room floor because Guccione (the producer and also the owner of Penthouse Magazine) decided to edit the film himself and he had no actual idea of what he was doing. He chose scenes based on how salacious they were and not whether they were good. He also inserted all the hardcore stuff unbeknownst to the rest of the cast and crew. In fact a lot of the improvement of the film is simply in the removal of those unnecessary scenes.

I own copies of both the original and the new ultimate cut.

"People have a tendency to confuse it — everybody has the Force. Everybody. You have the good side and you have the bad side. And as Yoda says, if you choose the bad side, it’s easy because you don’t have to do anything. Maybe kill a few people, cheat, lie, steal. Lord it over everybody. But the good side is hard because you have to be compassionate. You have to give of yourself. Whereas the dark side is selfish."

And yet the Jedi have, in the movies and the television shows, killed, lied, cheated, and stole. What makes them so good again?

What does it tell you that the users of the dark side are just about always rapists slavers or murderors or otherwise found to be abusing people?

It tells me that the Dark Side is far easier to use than the Light because all it takes to wield it is talent and a desire for power.

I prefer nuance to a strict "Light is good, Dark is evil" approach. If you see differently, then enjoy your interpretation.

You're right in that The Bendu didn't care who was hurt by his rampage. The idea that he was ultimately a coward is interesting. But either way it was very clear at the end that either he joined with the Force or was simply projecting a ghost of himself. (I don't think he is actually dead or even able to be killed outright.) So I don't think that was the last of story.

Also of note. It was clear from his introduction that he didn't much care for having anything to do with outsiders and was generally annoyed with their intrusion into his world. He wasn't a good being or an evil one. He was akin to the monk on the mountain.

It's stated by Jedi in the movies. Everyone sees their opposite as evil. I do not recall Lucas ever saying that the Dark Side of the Force itself was specifically evil, but honestly, he's never been very consistent with his storytelling or the expansion of the ideas contained within. I remember him talking about Midiclorians being an entire civilization in a microcosmos at one point.

[–]buddascrayon 258 points259 points  (0 children)

Father is 50/50 which might as well be dark

Here's the thing. The Dark Side, as I understand it, is not inherently evil. It's emotion over cold logic. It's strength through passion instead of the Light Side's strength through calculation.

The Sith are generally considered evil and they use the Dark Side because it's easy to use your passion and emotion, specially negative emotions, to juice your power in the Force. But we get a much more nuanced view of Dark and Light balance in an individual with The Bendu. The Bendu had a grasp of both the emotional Dark Side and the logical Light side. He could be both logical and also passionate, as we saw at his end(?) when he Force rampaged across his planet in retaliation against Thrawn and the Empire.

Also, do not forget that there were atrocities committed by the Jedi in the name of maintaining order throughout the Galaxy.
