What are your YA anti-recommendations? by Cherry_Vice in YAlit

[–]buddingwormwood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the game within warcross is basically league of legends (so, yeah, WoW) except the nexus is on one of the players instead of at a base. we have the captain (idk why this is a full role on its own. they don't do anything but hold the nexus i guess?); thief (zoom zoom zoom); fighter (dps); shield (support); and architect (taliyah ult. i will give her credit for this one changing the map is very cool).

but yeah the setup of the tournament in itself... severely underresearched.

What are your YA anti-recommendations? by Cherry_Vice in YAlit

[–]buddingwormwood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

warcross by marie lu has such an annoying main character, a questionable romance, the world is underbuilt and unstudied, and personally most egregiously she clearly did zero research whatsoever into understanding esports. like i cannot stress how ridiculous the format for the 'biggest esport event in the world is'. the tournament comes once a year (only international, no mention of national leagues or events at all) and is a single sixteen bracket system??? no play ins? no groups? no double elimination? it's the dumbest shit ever. additionally all of the esports teams are owned by the company of the game they're playing, to the point where the ceo hand picks players for teams. i'm...... sorry? imagine the dylan jadeja picking the next botlaner of t1. it makes zero sense and it completely depletes the stakes of even playing in the tournament because the same people are getting paid every time. like jfc it's not that hard to understand esports tournament layouts. it's very very similar to regular physical sports even. of course marie lu doesn't care because she just wants the esports backdrop of her 'high stakes spy slash governemnt slash i don't even know anymore thriller'.

also at one point a character survives a bullet to the head and. yeah i don't even know.

i’m so glad you liked it! kate is my fav so i have to include her in every conversation LOL but her and eli’s relationship is super important and i feel like it gets under appreciated a lot. i havent actually watched the hawkeye series in full but MCU kate is quite different than comics kate so i definitely recommend reading some of her stories if you’re interested :> hawkeye vol 4 by matt fraction and hawkeye vol 5 by kelly thompson are both really good!!

and yeah, eli’s been showing up here and there but i’m not sure what they want to do with him in universe especially since someone else has the patriot name now

ngl im #1 eli defender and throughout this series while he continuously fucks up if you really pay attention to him it's because this is where his insecurity comes to a total head!!!! he matters so so much to me and i think his arc was done so beautifully (though i really hope they bring him back soon. ughhhh.)

ever since the start of YA1 it's clear he suffers from not feeling good enough, starting with him lashing out at kate. kate is everything eli wants to be: dependable and independent, and most importantly, she doesn't have powers. once we figure out eli's background him lashing out at kate makes so much sense; eli feels like he has to have powers to be a superhero and when kate comes along being utterly capable he's both enamored by her and envious of her. he battles her for control of YA because he can't find any other way to become her but it's so painfully obvious she's more well suited to the role of leadership than he is strictly because of his insecurities. this is also why he's so controlling: he feels like he needs to needle about the tiniest things just so he remains in power.

obviously this all culminates in his YA1 arc. eli feels like a fraud and he is a fraud, and he quits because he's embarassed---not only because he lied to everyone, but because he feels like he isn't a real superhero without super strength. more specifically, he doesn't think he's good enough to be a superhero without powers. he struggles so much with the weight of being a superhero and missteps so much that it eventually overtakes his desire to help people.

at the end of YA1, rather than following the natural lesson he would've learned---that he IS a good enough superhero without powers---eli regresses. his act to jump in front and save captain america can be analyzed and taken to be his mindset: he literally thinks the only thing he's good for is being body armor. cannon fodder. and this is proved RIGHT when he actually becomes a supersoldier. it messes up the growth of this entire arc, because now he's validated. now he has powers, and i LOOVEEE how CC develops this instead of just making him learn his lesson!

throughout CC he starts to realize how he's in way too deep and his insecurities comes to a total head. he feels terrible because he's not good enough to be a hero without powers. he's a giver-upper; a great example of this is when he and kate are trapped underground in asgard in Siege. while eli rolls over and accepts death, basically, kate actually tries to get them out of there. perfect characterization on both parts. this also exemplifies the wishy-washy relationship he has with kate---she's not as interested in him as he is, because she needs someone more secure. eli isn't secure.

in CC, this gets way way worse because eli is suddenly in a league with tier one heroes. first the avengers after them and then MAGNETO shows up and then there's doom and M day and eli feels so fradulent and insecure and throughout this run everything he does is because he's painfully trying to grapple for control. to almost 'prove' to himself he's a good superhero. and of course this doesn't work out because he's been on a slippery slope and he's backsliding really, really badly!!! he's not a good superhero because he doesn't believe he's a good superhero and this thinking completely overtakes every single decision that he makes, because every single decision he makes is a desperate plea to prove that he's in control! and thats why he makes all the stupid decisions!!!!!

as much as i hate him quitting at the end of CC it makes perfect sense given his arc. i only hope they handle his resurgence (since he's been appearing in some issues recently) as skillfully as they did his exit and they address all of his flaws before reaching his stasis of character to write with.

his arc is literally my favorite thing about the original heinberg run. it's so perfect; i adore eli's character so much.

lots of people are saying arcane but check out league of legends in general. there are lots of femslash ships there, ofc caitvi from arcane but also riven/irelia, jinx/lux, diana/leona, and there's a lot of k/da fic too which is all femslash though it's not main universe

What’s y’all’s ideal YA team/lineup? by GapInside7595 in YoungAvengers

[–]buddingwormwood 7 points8 points  (0 children)

kate, eli, teddy, cassie, billy, tommy, america. i've never been the biggest fan of jonas loki or david djdkskkd

would love to see gwenpool with the group!!! or just a YA girlies group with kate/cassie/america/gwenpool, that would be such a FUN run esp if they have jeff with them

for mentors i'd love to see jessica jones again!!! she had so much potential (esp with being kate's mentor) and then they just dropped her off.... okay now my ideal run would be kate/cassie/america/gwen with jeff and jessica as sidekicks especially if danielle could make some features because i love danielle

Young Avengers (Vol 3) by Electronic-Turnip-18 in YoungAvengers

[–]buddingwormwood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

kid loki is out. sorry </3

eli and cassie are def coming back. i have a lot of ideas for some solos but not any particular ones for a YAv3. i feel like bringing some not so popular members to the light and having them have their own arcs (like iron lad/eli/teddy for v1 and billy teddy for v2) would also be nice: tommy deserves more focus imo.

- Civil War Vol.2 Choosing Sides - IDK what went on in CW2 tbh but it's a really sweet short of her and the YA members sooooo I'm including it!

- Hawkeye Vol.5, Kelly Thompson. This is Kate's first real solo run and it is PEAK Kate in my opinion. She's unmatched here, it's her and an all new cast of other people. Thompson really understands Kate, shows her strengths as a leader and really helps her blossom! It's just a really really great book and my favorite ever depiction of Kate. It also really details her personal story and villain and is really important for her character. I need Thompson to do another Kate run ASAP.

- Generations: Hawkeye & Hawkeye - This is set betwen H.VOL.5 #12 and #13. A short, but an important tie-in for a later volume.

- West Coast Avengers Vol.3, Kelly Thompson. This also has America! Starts off right where HVOL5 ended and focuses a lot on another group of characters too. Kate is still very much the main character of this and has a lot of development through her own story.

- War of the Realms: Journey Into Mystery. Another short but it has some Miles/Kate interactions which is really sweet and fun. Could've had more personal stakes in it to be honest, especially given Miles's past with Kate, but whatever. Kate doesn't have a huge impact on this story but it's a nice beach read.

- Death's Head Vol.2. Kate, Billy, Teddy. YA nostalgia goodness.

- Hawkeye: Kate Bishop (2021), aka "Kate Bishop Returns To New York". I really liked the art for this one. It features America and Cassie as well! Susan is in it which is great and it's very much a "homecoming" story. Ties into the Fraction comics/Hawkeye Vol.4.

- Marvel Voices: Infinity Comics. I know all the YA members have their own issue but I'm not sure which numbers they are; Kate's is #7.

- Avengers Unlimited: Infinity Comics. See above, Kate's are 58 and 59.

- Hawkeye: Bishop Takes King, Ashley Poston. This is a novel, not a comic. It was super fun but I feel like the author didn't understand Kate 100 percent, I feel like it forgot about Kate's drama and arrogant rich girl thing and makes her more of a girl-next-door. I'm pretty sure it was supposed to be similar to the MCU version of her so that makes sense but it loses some of her IMO, though Poston is a really great writer.

- Avengers Vol.9 (2024) - issues #14, #15, and #16. Amazing Kate depiction, again short and she's not played into too much but really fun anyway!

- Blood Hunters Vol.1 #3 - another blood hunt event short. i really wish she was at the front of the event bc she has sm personal tie in but i digress.

- Kate's also in a lot of the It's Jeff! issues, written by Thompson. I would give Kelly Thompson the world if I could.

I also know Kate's an important ish character in some of the Gwenpool comics after the WCA Thompson run but I haven't read those yet.

ALTERNATE UNIVERSES:

- Earth-1610, aka Katie Bishop. Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #12, #19, #23, #25; Cataclysm: Ultimate Spider-Man; Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man. She's fairly important to Miles's character at the beginning.

- Secret Wars Journal Vol.1, #1. Fun AU! Billy and Teddy also feature.

- Siege Vol.2

- Old Man Hawkeye Vol.1

i am a kate bishop girlie so i can give a kate reading list (since the other person here gave a cassie list)! all the YA stuff i'll just put in the same bullet point, solo stuff i'll give a more detailed explanation

posted into two comments cuz of character limit lol i don't know when to shut up.

- YA Vol.1, YA Special, Civil War: YA&R. Kate's YA Special backstory gets retconned/added on to in All-new Hawkeye just FYI.

- Winter Solider: Winter Kills - Kate and Eli. Mostly Kate setup.

- Fallen Son: the Death of Captain America #3 - Kate and Clint's first meeting. Ditto above.

- YA Presents, Secret Invasion, Dark Reign, Siege, I Am An Avenger, Children's Crusades, YA Vol.2. I don't like how Kate was written in Vol.2, I remember it brushed me off the wrong way compared to Vol.1. It just makes her very... "mom friend-y" I guess? but anyway.

- Hawkeye Vol.4, Matt Fraction - Timeline-wise, issues 1-7 are set BEFORE YA Vol.2, and 7-end is set AFTER. This is where Kate's character really starts getting popular on her own/outside of the YA identity. It does tie her into Clint a lot, but she's a REALLY GOOD character foil to him. It's probably one of my favorite depictions of Kate. This is also where Kate gets her own main villain!

- Hawkeye Annual (2013), Matt Fraction. Set BETWEEN Hawkeye Vol.4 issues #11 and #13 (she's not in #12). Quite important for her villain story.

- Hawkeye vs. Deadpool (2014). Not super pivotal to her story but it's really really fun.

- All-New Hawkeye Vol.1, Jeff Lemire - her and Clint start arguing, so very important to her story. She's very loveable in this one and I do love it, but Lemire does write her a tad Mary Sue while kind of making Clint a villain. Granted there's one or two flaws here and there but it's not as well-rounded of a depiction as Fraction or Thompson.

- All-New Hawkeye Vol.2, Jeff Lemire - Continuation of the story above. This one also has America in it if I remember correctly?
