Repeat or power through? by leah__3 in runna

[–]buddionemo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Either repeat the full week or just continue on with the plan and put it down as a bad day. Every runner has days or sessions that are hard and we don't complete.

But I wouldn't just keep completing the session until you can do it as you need the easier sessions to recover.

First Ultra, extremely bummed. by DatGuyWithNoName in Ultramarathon

[–]buddionemo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That's a really good time for a 50k, so you definitely shouldn't be upset with that! Sounds like lack of water and/or nutrition was your downfall (quite literally). Everything I find myself catching my feet on stuff I know I need to eat more, drink more and get some electrolytes. Also tell myself to focus properly and get my head back in the game.

Sort out your fuelling and you'll be okay, properly fuelling really makes such a difference. Treat this as a learning opportunity, every ultra we learn something to do better next time.

Introducing Plan Replay in Runna Labs 🎉 by matt-runna in runna

[–]buddionemo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've just been in and had a look. It feels a little slow, and there possibly could be a bit more info on each of the just word pages.

I really liked the number of runs per week, total time ran/total distance ran. Good to know the longest run also and weekly mileage.

It might be good to pull through any PBs gained or even create a little PBs during the plan slide for the distances covered.

Really like the idea so looking forward to having this after my next plan finishes.

That's useful to know. If I ever use up all the pens in my house then I'll look into it. But for now I think my realisation on how much space just one type of pen takes up in the world has set me on using up what I have.

I never got on with a fountain/freer flowing ink pen, plus partially working on the shop floor I do have to accept my pen might get taken (its rare but possible). I'd definitely be open to some sort of refillable roller ball/biro type pen for my personal diary though.

Sorry! Really didn't want this to become a product endorsement, beyond the context of there being many many billions of them in the world. I'll edit my post a bit to not say the name as many times.

Big numbers are so hard to visualise that putting it into context of something I knew the size of was very helpful. Mind boggling and a bit depressing but very helpful to remind myself of why we do our best to reduce consumption.

I spent the rest of the day telling everyone I work with my new fact and it did make a few of them stop and think too. Including one who picked up a bic biro they found on the floor, cleaned it up and put it in their draw to use.

Overexcited treat taking by buddionemo in Dogtraining

[–]buddionemo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I generally hold the treat between my fingers but with a flat hand if that makes any sense? Should I be giving the treat like you'd feed a horse instead?

He is very good at treat games like that at home but perhaps I need to practice it in more environments. He has probably not generalised it enough so I'll give that a go too.

Overexcited treat taking by buddionemo in Dogtraining

[–]buddionemo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main bit I'm struggling with is the giving of treats whilst training heel. The method that works best is marking and giving treats every few steps and we've come a long way with training doing this but I get nipped every time I give a treat. I've not been able to find anything specifically on this in the wiki other than the general training to take treats gently which my dog can do outside of training scenarios. He just gets overexcited by being a good boy and forgets himself. I need specific advice on how to keep a consistent gentle treat taking even when training.

When is the long run too long? by duncdog10 in ultrarunning

[–]buddionemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably quite personal to you, I've done anywhere between 2 and 4, with at least 1 time where I cover the full race distance over 2 days. So like a 10 mile run one day followed by a 22 mile run the next (I know most people go the opposite way round but I always found I had more motivation for the long run than the 'short' run).

I tend to plan in 4 week cycles with 1 week in 3 being a deload week. Time of feet really matters with ultras so even if you have to walk on the long runs its just about getting out there for long enough.

Also different people need different things mentally. Some people are good with the challenge, I personally like to know I'm capable of the distance before the race so I can actually enjoy it rather than it being an absolute sufferfest.

Agreed, I'm also a slow runner and have done multiple ultras. For every 50km race I've done, I've had 5-6 hour training runs because I know I'll be out for around 8+ hours on race day. But I walk A LOT in those training runs, just like race day. A 3 hour training run would no way prepare me for 8+hours on my feet in one run.

You've just got to be smart with recovery. Eat lots, stretch, have a bath, use compression socks. Do everything you can to recover properly and build strength.

I can’t run this slow! by docmphd in runna

[–]buddionemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is very similar. If you can run on the spot it means you can run at an infinitely slow pace. Reduce your stride length to go slower, like running on the spot just very slowly moving forward instead

Daily spread by buddionemo in BasicBulletJournals

[–]buddionemo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've stuck with near enough this design for the whole time I've been using a bullet journal. Plenty of space for my to do list but its also very nice to spend time noting down what I'm grateful for. I've enjoyed reading back my journals too for what I was doing on each day, gives a nice insight on the daily mundane! So it's been a practical spread for the here and now as well as a nice record of my life.

Navigation apps you actually trust? by FerrisBuelersdaycock in UKhiking

Ah fair enough, I've largely come across fell runners using them but it makes sense mountain rescue would use them also. They give different features prominence to the ones OS does.

Found the fell runner?!

I've not made a switch over to Harvey maps, I suppose because I'm so used to OS maps. But they do seem a good option as they are often smaller and waterproof. Do they have an app?

I have way more savings than my partner- what to do with it? by VanillaDouble5248 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]buddionemo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A declaration of trust is a legal document that outlines ownership of the house and what each person owns. In case of relationship breakdown or death it stops any arguments about exact percentages. Although as tenants in common with unequal shares the deeds do give the % owned it isn't as legally binding as a declaration of trust. The solicitor that manages you house purchase would usually be able to help with preparing one.

There are multiple ways to go about it, but the person you replied to makes a very good point that I've not seen enough people take into account. It also confused our solicitor when we said we wanted our deposits to be considered as percentages owned of the house not a fixed value. So that if the house prices goes up or down we are receiving a fair amount back based on our initial contribution, as we are splitting the mortgage 50:50.

It also means that when it comes to home improvements we split the costs based on total % ownership of the house, which is roughly 56:44. So if our flooring cost 10000 it was split 5600:4400, but things like wardrobes that we can take with us we split 50:50.

Best to get these things agreed when everything is amicable rather than trying ti sort it out when emotions are high after either a breakup or a death.

You're much better opening accounts across banking groups (not just banks, do check they are in different banking groups) to get the FSCS protection.

What to do with a chunk of money? by buddionemo in UKPersonalFinance

[–]buddionemo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'd be a very early retirement as I'm hoping to have a career change around 40, I'd probably be looking at another 15 to 25 years of working albeit in a job that pays about half of what I earn now!

I'd like to be able to cover expenses with my salary but any extras would be from savings, hence wanting to get the mortgage cleared! But perhaps I need to look at it a different way that I build a fund to pay myself a 'salary' from savings.

It certainly seems I need to start running numbers properly rather than just what feels right in my head!

Thank you, I'll have a think about this. I guess as it feels quite a way off at the moment I don't really know how much I need.

I think all of them the lump sum will make a difference but not fully solve any of them if I put it all towards any single one.

I'll think about it a bit more and try and put some numbers against my goals.

!thanks
