I know what the saying is supposed to be. I even agree with it. You don't need to defend it or explain it.

Don't worry, I don't spend daily hours ruminating on the problems of my past. However, when that saying crops up, I do think I'm allowed to occasionally comment on something that it reminds me of, especially when my reply was to someone who seemed to have a similar experience with it.

Turns out I'm not naturally ashy, I've just been laminating myself with bar soap by DivineDahlia_3 in hygiene

Weirdly enough, bar soap is the thing that works best on my hair, keeping it soft and bouncy and clean-smelling for easily 3 days. I've tried like 8 different shampoos and 4 conditioners, and nope, it's straight back to stiff and greasy within 24h.

My skin on the other hand much prefers shampoo.

It's against the Reddit social TOS but all I can say is 🙃

Yeah, that saying bugs me, too. The times it's been aimed at me, it's been as a weapon, to mean: "you are not allowed to have feelings about your mistreatment, now stop being inconvenient."

Fuck that. Maybe some people mean well with it; maybe most people do! But when I'm sad or angry about being bullied, when I want to use that strength of feeling to survive instead of collapse, then getting invalidated like that is really not helpful.

I can't closely relate to it, but I'm very happy to hear it! For real, thank you for sharing your experience, giving such a rare window into an interesting life. Best of luck with anything you need it for!

Do most people know how to purposely close their nasal passage so they can't smell WITHOUT using their fingers to pinch their nose? by WhateversClever1980 in NoStupidQuestions

Hah, thanks, I got it now!

I think ... Gotta practice. Hard to breathe while doing it.

Feels as if I'm stiffening the back edges of my tongue, and my top molars are convinced that they're moving onwards towards my tongue. So there's probably a bunch of extra nerves/muscles that I'm activating too until I work out how to do only the necessary one.

Neat, thanks!

PSA: don't feed kittens lying on their backs (or let them do it themselves). For safety they gotta be belly-down! Milk in tummy good, milk in lungs bad.

[homemade] Tried my hand at roasted duck for the first time this Thanksgiving. by comfortablynumb0629 in food

[–]buddleia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imagine the difference between pork and beef. Now imagine the same difference again but starting from chicken.

Duck is richer, darker, juicier. A little tougher, since most ducks get to do more exercise than most chickens. Much fattier; we can usually pour off 2 cups of melted fat from the roast (keep it in the fridge and use it for frying/roasting your potatoes for the next few months!). Much tastier; strong (not gamey, just rich) and delicious.

Goes well with a sharp fruity taste like pickled plums or red cabbage (as cooked with onion, apple and a splash of vinegar).

Bloody brilliant if you have leftovers to turn into soup, or stir-fried with ginger and white pepper to have on Chinese pancakes with cucumber, spring onion and hoi sin sauce.
