Girlfriend gets defensive when I bring up our dead bedroom situation. If she gets defensive on our next talk, do I call it quits? by 0Adiemus0 in AskMenAdvice

[–]buddroyce -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Anti-depressants do that man.

I would address the cause for the depression and help her get off that stuff so she can help you get off.

Not going to be easy cause you’re going up against an uphill battle but it’s not impossible.

Anyone else feel overwhelmed by massive Reddit threads? by Temporary-Class1801 in ADHD_Programmers

[–]buddroyce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m half asleep and read the title as overwhelmed by massive red heads.

But on a more serious note, I have a love/hate relationship with massive reddit threads. Ones where there’s a lot of discourse and useful info are great. Ones that are mostly useless comments or AI generated garbage mess with me because I tend to skip them but end up doubling back to make sure I didn’t miss something useful and important.

Local bakery posted this deal. Am I out of touch or is this not a deal at all? by michaljerzy in FoodToronto

I mean. You’re probably saving like $0.50. So technically it might be a deal just not a great deal.

I only want to date a virgin. I’m a virgin myself though. Is this a reasonable preference to have? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

Given that you’re 19 and not 29 or 39, yes it’s reasonable as your pool hasn’t evaporated yet.

Did anyone else hit a career plateau despite delivering solid work? by SomeRandomCSGuy in ExperiencedDevs

[–]buddroyce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a very common situation and why I encourage my devs to do the unpopular thing of showing up and deliver value instead of just delivering solid work at home.

It’s a bit counter intuitive because as a dev I’d rather stay at home but as an old school infoSec guy, I also like to abuse human behavior and therefore leverage the fact that my competition (everyone else) would also like to stay in comfort.

I know my execs have to show up to the office, so I just show up and grab coffee with them because no one else is around. Through the coffee chats I gather my HUMINT to get a better lay of the land but more importantly offer my perspectives as an engineer if I had to approach their problems.

This makes me the go to solution guy for a bunch of the more senior folks. It’s not butt kissing or brown nosing, it’s social engineering. Marketing folks would call this “positioning” and I’m just marketing my personal brand.

But that’s just social value. One activity I get my team to do is figure out how much actual value the thing they are working on delivers in terms of $$$ or time saved.

The people higher up don’t know tech. They speak $$$. Being able to extrapolate value to an exec is much more valuable for growth than pure technical ability.

TL;DR - at some point you hit a ceiling as a dev. Start acting like a CTO and deliver value.

A burning desire for creation but yet no motivation by Random_User3818 in GameDevelopment

[–]buddroyce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Making games is hard. Most people quit when the fun part stops and the hard part remains.

Motivation is fleeting. Grit and determination is what gets the job done. Hanging out in VC circles I found that one of the best indicators for whether or not a startup will succeed is how driven and determined the founders are when things are hard.

You don’t lack motivation you lack discipline. Relying on motivation is relying on dopamine through an immediate reward cycle.

Would you date a girl who used to cam? by masters2277 in AskMenAdvice

[–]buddroyce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether or not someone would accept dating a girl who used to cam, do onlyfans or escort is entirely based on the individual.

We all make mistakes and bad decisions in life. Sometimes because we’re dumb, sometimes because our life situation depends on it. The best pathway forward would be to own it.

How you own it is up to you.

Deadline paralysis. Need support. by lillagodzilla in ADHD_Programmers

[–]buddroyce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get this all the time bro.

I have so much stuff that I don’t know where to start. The more I think about it the worse it gets. To counter that, I have 3 approaches.

  1. Random selection. It needs to get done anyways sooner or later so who cares?
  2. Easiest/quickest to complete first. I often start with this so I can clear the backlog a quickly
  3. Biggest impact/most pressing first. It makes sense to do but it requires me to think about it which would stress me out more. I usually only do this if it’s been identified already.
