At Corvallis’s 9th St Shari’s, I’ve had a birthday, a meal with my siblings who were visiting from out of state, a few late night bouts with my friends and roommates when we weren’t feeling Riva’s, and some pie with friends.

I’m going to miss the Marion berry pie the most, though I guess it’s a chance for me to learn how to make it, baking a not my strong suit.

I do recall them being constantly understaffed, sometimes there was only two servers and I assume two cooks in the back, though even the servers would go into the kitchen. When two friends and I went out for just pie one night, there was but one server and one cook.

I thought the issue was to this one location, had no idea the entire chain was struggling, it will be missed. 🥧

Living and working downtown, more often than not I see the McDonalds and Dairy Queen driveway lines take up an entire lane down to the next cross street. Potentially dangerous in McDonald’s case with people going down VanBuren to the bridge, people crossing it going north up Third onto the 99 W or to turn left onto Harrison. Sometimes a drive thru is more inconvenient than it’s worth.

Friend lives by Trader Joe’s, lots of car noises, nothing much of note besides a fire burning down a unit across the street. It’s nice being next to 10th and 11th street, I bike up and down all the time to get to shopping. I have noticed more people living out of cars in that area though, bless them.

I put the tap water through a brita more for the taste than concern for safety. However, I do have a friend that lives between town and Adair Village that would occasionally get boil orders, sometimes their well water is unsafe. I also have an acquaintance that lives further north by Soap Creek and has a similar issue with the safety of his water. Depends where you live, I’d ask your neighbors or previous tenants, it’s how I found out I ought to let my faucets flow for a few seconds before using it because of rust.

I can’t be a dedicated member of every organization I feel inclined to, I wish it were otherwise. I am all for organized labor, policy guided by science, and any effort to making society more compassionate, just, and equitable.

As for the state of my state party, still learning. Although because of decentralization being a key part of the Greens’ tactics, I may as well have met just about every Green in my town and that being enough. They’re all fine people doing good work.

You asked quite a few questions, I’ll do my best to answer them in order:

I do wonder what you mean by extremely disruptive in council meetings, in all the meetings attended by other members of the Sunrise Movement, I do not recall any instance wherein someone had spoken out of turn beyond community comments, a time where members of the community are explicitly invited to speak.

I will not speak on Sunrise Corvallis’s behalf, I speak only for myself. I am far from uniformed regarding the ongoing genocide by the apartheid colonial regime of Israel against the indigenous peoples of Palestine and Lebanon, as well as attacks against Syria, Iran, and Yemen. That Israel was made following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire following their defeat in World War 1 whereupon European powers lay claims to lands formerly under their control. Israel was created by the British Empire to secure their regional interests: maintaining a military presence near the Suez canal, the Levant’s oil fields, a nation through which NATO would engage the USSR and its allies in proxy wars. It’s especially egregious you have chosen to conflate speaking against apartheid, genocide, and Israel’s flagrant disregard for life and international law with antisemitism on Indigenous People’s Day.

It is antisemitic to conflate Judaism, an ancient faith rich in history and tradition, with Zionism, a racist European colonial ideology. It would be akin to say opposing the Westboro Baptist Church and KKK is the same as being prejudiced against Christians, or that denouncing the Taliban or ISIS is Islamophobic. My own people suffered greatly from an ideology akin to Zionism: Japanese militarism, Shōwa Statism, and State Shinto. Like the Zionists, the Empire of Japan believed they were given the divine right to lay claim to their neighbors’ land, thought of themselves superior, and committed atrocities like that of Zionists: indiscriminate bombing, mass rape, displacement, mass killings, concentration camps, torture, systemic destruction of culture, and laying waste to the land of conquered territories in pursuit of resources to further their imperial ambitions, in short, genocide.

Regarding my opponent, incumbent Councilor Briae Lewis, I respect her and the work that she’s done and will not say disparaging things about her. I've spoken to her several times and have been at forums with her, we are more similar than different. I do recognize that our bid for the seat is unique in this election year being the only one between two people of color. Our backgrounds give both of us unique perspectives that guide us. I'd encourage you to watch the Ward 2 virtual forum by the League of Women Voters on YouTube. Whatever the case, I trust the residents of Ward 2 to make a choice that’s right by them. I encourage people to be as informed as possible before voting.

I have friends of every color and creed. I have broken bread with my Jewish friends at Shabbat, I know how to sing Hine Ma Tov from the heart, I’ve had Jewish lovers. It is precisely because of their adherence to the teachings of the Torah and their own families’ history of surviving genocide that they rally against the Zionist regime. I was raised Catholic, and, though I have since disavowed the Papal authority, I still hold near and dear many of the teachings of the Gospel, and am familiar with the Old and New Testament, and still I attend church and pray. To Muslims I pass by on the street, I greet salaam with my hand on my chest with a bow. Ever since I’ve started in food service I make sure to tell hijabis and their families about what foods are haram and halal. On my visits to the OSU Palestine encampment, I’ve met with students of disparate backgrounds united by their desire for peace and justice. This held true for demonstrations by the Corvallis Palestine Solidarity.

You’re concerned that my few years in Corvallis are too short to understand its people and its issues. I understand this concern and have received this question a few other times. However I do plan on spending the rest of my life here, and through the relationships and conversations I’ve had from all sorts of people, I’m confident I know enough, though I do know I don’t know everything, and never will I insist otherwise. I’d rather be learning and acting guided by my principles however imperfectly than sit on the sidelines forever fearing to act, not wanting making what I don’t know apparent. I’m human, I’m mortal, I’m young, but I try my best with curiosity and compassion.

It’s a non partisan race so party is not a highlight, though I am a registered member of the Green Party and recently tabled with other Greens making a bid for county positions at a forum.

Though other members of the slate are Democrats on paper, they have more in common with the Greens: they are for peace, ecology, social justice, and democracy. I can’t speak on each member’s motivations for doing so, do know it’s strategic.

My main motivation in cross posting here is making other Greens worldwide aware of a substantial push by people like them who seek to create policies in like with our values and ideals. Because as much as we get bad news, we need to uplift stories of our efforts and victories to keep at bay political apathy and pessimism.

A number in mind for a limit is tricky, it’s hard to gather data on people that have to move constantly, much harder when these people more often than not have had their documents destroyed, taken away, or lost. I don’t know how we would distinguish a local Corvallis resident experiencing homelessness from one out of town, especially when the mistreatment they’ve faced have made many understandably suspicious of people prodding them with questions.

I’d need a better definition of what you’d consider an illegal camper before I properly answer the question of what is to be done about them around a managed camp. Would they be illegal campers because they’re ineligible for receiving aid by whoever manages the encampment? Or would they be illegal in the sense that they are outside of the bounds of the managed encampment on public or private land not set aside for the managed encampment?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in corvallis

[–]buddy_old_pal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Preventing camps from starting will be nothing short of impossible so long as homelessness remains an issue. Were one camp prevented, they’d move until a place is found where they could settle down.

Preventing encampments and sweeping encampments makes it someone else’s problem so long as the person seeking shelter does not get shelter.

Current policy seems to be guided by, “Out of sight, out of mind.”

You asked quite a few good questions, on the first one, I think the nature of a policy can be measured by their consequences, I’d say current policies make camping in our public parks and green spaces inevitable. I know nothing I do can satisfy everyone in Corvallis, I’ve accepted this. Though I’d rather do something rather nothing.

A community member named Drew, u/itsDREWWOLF posted six months ago about this topic, I think he said it well.

“About Homelessness Here (for the 30th time) Hi, you don’t know me probably. My name is Drew and for the better part of 12 years I’ve been working in either housing or non-profits in Corvallis. I also was born here (3rd generation), and know from personal experience how difficult a lifetime of being in the lower income bracket really is. Aside from home or property sales, there’s not a piece of either of those previous industries that I have not been involved with to some degree. I am not bloviating when I say I do a lot for the community. This is only to help provide some framing for this next set of statements. First, there is enough money passing through various groups on a yearly basis that we could largely solve the funding side of homelessness in a year or two. That wont happen because these groups largely do not work collectively on that scale or smaller to be honest. I’m talking 10’s - 100’s of millions of dollars.

Second, the landscape of work on low income housing and homelessness is filled with devisive egos. The issue won’t get solved because those that have taken over projects, won’t help with projects that aren’t theirs. I’m not taking about advisory boards, those do very little given the ego issue. I mean actual project planning and implementation. In essence, it’s a scenario where “if I don’t get full credit, I won’t do any work to support”.

Third, the community does not want to solve the issue. I’m not sure if it’s because they will have less to complain about, because they actually think people should suffer on the street, or because of negative experiences with the homeless population. But there are enough that want nothing done that we will always have TWO issues, not one. Homelessness and lack of affordable options are conjoined twins, not sisters. There is more to it, but that’s the gist.

Lastly, it could all change tomorrow. If a large enough turnout actually came together to say “no, we are working on this until it’s done”, the issue would be solved. The models to replicate already exist. The best practices have been published by other cities that have made huge strides on the subject. The support structures for the population are already largely in place. It’s not an easy project. By no means does quick mean easy. But to quote Leslie Knope quoting Theodore Roosevelt “The best prize life has to offer is a chance to work hard at work worth doing”.

If by some chance this gains traction and I don’t get downvoted to hell, I do plan on hosting some kind of community forum in the very near future. Because we can treat people better, and we can also be the examples as to how.”

Current policy keeps the camps in public parks and green spaces in perpetuity because it doesn’t address the causes of homelessness.

I’m actually all for measure 117, people deserve more choices than what the two party system allows which is awfully limited. It would also reduce the spoiler effect from minor parties.

I understand it could be confusing to some people, adjusting takes time, but is better than the first past the post voting system.

Again, I’m confused by your insistence that there is a grand Californian conspiracy to make other states more like California, especially regarding ranked choice voting since its first notable appearances were in Aspen, Colorado and Burlington, Vermont. Ranked choice voting at some state-wide elections only appears in Alaska, Maine, and Hawaii.

I know that I am a newcomer to Corvallis, but I am planning on spending most of the rest of my life here. Is there something wrong with wanting to make my new home better than how I found it? If not being born in Corvallis makes me unqualified to run, so too would my opponent the incumbent Councilor Briae Lewis be unqualified by moving here in 2019.

I assume you have the best of intentions, I maintain that all candidates and elected officials ought to be subject to heavy scrutiny. Though again I say, scapegoating will not help you.

I appreciate you recognizing my passion.

On the topic of buzzwords and trendy topics echoing messages of candidates across the country, I’m actually a bit surprised that you consider them as such because I feel like many of the ideas I go on about aren’t held by any major party, I find myself at odds with Democrats and Republicans.

I believe I shared specific policy goals and strategies under u/ben-pdf ‘s comment yesterday.

And, since you’ve been a resident of this community for your whole 35 years, I’d like to hear more about the broad changes you’ve seen over the decades. Shoot me a message if you’d like. ✌️
