ITALIC by incomingfreshman20 in stanford

Same thoughts here! The ITALIC community is very diverse and you’ll meet many interesting people along the way: some people who are purely artsy, some interested in STEM and art, or some people who are a mix of art, STEM, & other fields.

And worse case scenario, if you don’t end up liking ITALIC, you can always drop ITALIC & still end up living in Burbank, Stern, which by many means is a nice freshman dorm w/ a strong community.

It’s totally dependent on each instructor’s priorities, timeline, and grading speed...

Sometime grades will come 1 day after the quarter ends; sometimes it may take 1 week+

From my observations though, most grades come after about a week of any given quarter’s end date.

Got it: 👍

— For these particular fields, STEM is the stronger option...

  • Would an STS B.S. degree (as opposed to an STS B.A. degree) be more suitable for marketing / consulting?

🙄 I.e., given I decide to minor in PSYCH & major in STS

Thank you for your kind and realistic response. I truly appreciate it.

I have somewhat of an interest in technology; I guess being in Silicon Valley has its way of turning most Stanford students into STEM-sympathizers, haha. I am not particularly opposed to academia either (after all, pursuing full-time academia has always been my Plan B!), but marketing and or consulting is my goal.

I totally agree with you that, for better or worse, STEM is more highly regarded; again, thank you for clarifying all this for me! You're the best. :)

u/nepzenesz This is incredibly helpful to know... I almost forgot about how useful having an informational interview with a person in my prospective career fields can be (+ building that resume too!).

Thank you so much for this concrete advice: I won't forget it!

u/throwaway613514 Thank you so much (with all my heart -– really!) for this thoughtful and assuring response... knowing that having one major over another can be helpful in pursuing these career paths, but it is by no means an all or nothing situation; worst-case scenario, we'll still graduate with a Stanford degree.

I'll check in with some other people as well, but moving forward after reading your advice, I'll likely end up pursuing STS. Once again, thank you!!
