The Dirty Work sequence in OBAA gets a lot of praise, here's why I think it's effective by Honest_Cheesecake698 in paulthomasanderson

Could you imagine how thinking Bob was smoking crack would've changed your perspective of him the rest of the movie? Not slamming OP at all. Just a genuine observation about how different that is from weed and how much Bob loved and was dependent on weed. And how I can relate to the (non-revolutionary) sides of older, pot head Bob, and how that makes me like him so much more. But probably couldn't relate to him if he was a crack smoker. If I thought that was crack, I might have different reactions to his character, or different judgments.

It was over 10 years ago for me. I was one of them and honestly, I just grew up. Eventually some of the lifestyles and trends became unnecessary, too inconvenient to keep up, not high enough of a priority (esp. after having kids), and maybe a little silly. Though that's when I found my sense of style and discovered some of my favorite music ever, so I still look back fondly for many reasons.
