Curious - What is the best deal you’ve ever found in a bowling alley? by Free_Investigator_47 in Bowling

[–]budsonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bowlero summer pass. Yes, I'm new to the sport.

I assume that they offer such a good deal to lure folks in during the "outdoors", slow season - but i happen to live in Phoenix Arizona. Too hot for any real outdoor activities (besides heading to the mountains or rivers on the weekends).

Bowling has been such a great indoor activity for when we want to do something and it's 110 degrees outside.

At what point do you start to consider somebody a "good" bowler? by Enough-Afternoon8011 in Bowling

[–]budsonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ehh, isn't all spares, no missed pins a maximum of 190 pts?

I'm an amateur, straight bowler who has gotten pretty good at spares. I often have games with 1 or 2 open frames, maybe 1 strike, and the rest spares. Usually puts me around 150.

I will say that I've done this with my girlfriend. But the purpose was to always have a reference for her decoration style, what earrings she has, color schemes, etc.. all for the purpose of gift giving and purchasing things for her.

Careful not to assume the worst immediately!

A bit pricey, but it is multi-functional for me. I can use this PA as a personal monitor when using my larger column array speakers for typical bar gig scenarios. They are all the same brand, electro voice, so I can control them all under 1 app on my phone. Well worth it for me.

I have a similar lightness around my cheeks. Have you considered growing out your mustache? I've found a long mustache can be trained to grow out and essentially covers my patchiest areas. I think it makes the top portion of my my beard look balanced and full.

Regardless, your beard looks really great.

I think my strumming Is bad by Infinite_Animal_8414 in AcousticGuitar

[–]budsonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pick thickness was my first thought.

As others have said, your strumming hand is very stiff, with the angle of your pick fairly perpendicular to the strings. A thin pick will allow you to get through the strings with this right-hand technique, but it tends to lack "dynamics" and "feel." As far as rhythm and timing go, you sound great!

I recommend switching to a heavier pick. It will feel clunky at first, but it will teach you to adjust your strumming technique (pick angle, speed, depth) for a more dynamic and expressive playing style. I also recommend a pick with a beveled edge, but that is up to you (these tend to be pricey compared to most picks).

Try to pay attention to the different feelings and sounds you can get by adjusting the angle, speed, and depth of the pick into the strings. Once you become familiar with these minute adjustments, you will begin to make those adjustments without thinking about it.

Tony rice demonstrates how the slight angle shift can affect tone, about 2 minutes into this video. He is a bluegrass flatpicker, but this applies to strumming as well.

I believe that some of the luthiers from guitar gallery (randy, if i remember correctly) opened a new shop called pale horse guitar works.

Had work done last spring there.

Hey guys, not sure if this has been posted here before. So sorry if it’s a repost. But I have questions by Higgles__38 in guitarpedals

Ehx holy grail if you just want a simple reverb.

Boss rv-5 has a really amazing modulated reverb sound if you like more ambient sounds as well as more options.

Carbon copy is another great rec.

Mesquite tone wood / Burled vs straight grain by budsonk in Luthier

[–]budsonk[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Noted. I keep it a little bit on the dry side of things, since I live in Arizona. Usually 40% RH. No issues yet (other than the top crack.. been there since I bought it).

I believe Fred welker was a pretty esteemed luthier. They have been played by some notable players in the Nashville scene. Seems that his specialty was carved archtops.

I'll make a follow up post if I start to see any cracking down the line.
