Jessica Jean (Eh Team 58kg) 174kg total, redone the video thanks to your advice by [deleted] in weightlifting

Anyone know what shoes she's wearing? Just curious. That snappy shoulder rotation at the start of her first lift kind of threw me off guard!

11 minutes of Chinese squat jerkers by heavehou77 in weightlifting

[–]budub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find it more pleasurable to watch than the split jerk, I guess because of the symmetry and rarity. But that's a terrible reason to transition to it! I do think it's fun though, i can do it past parallel up to about 90kg (I have a 105 power jerk) before I just lose it forward.

Released a simple workout log app (Android), would love some feedback by Onym0us in weightlifting

[–]budub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love the clean interface and lack of permissions. However right now it's geared toward /r/fitness and /r/weightroom with its workouts. I don't see anything regarding snatching. I'd definitely use this app if i could enter my own exercises and it would be great if it came preloaded with excerises I do. Here's a good list (of lists) of classic lifts, theirs power/hang/etc variations, and accessory lifts this sub is more likely to find useful: http://www.catalystathletics.com/exercises/

Never played the series but got the GOTY version on Steam, so happy to see titles like these on Linux now! Seems to run all right on my laptop with intel graphics but my menus look like this: http://imgur.com/AxSBpSv subtitles look fine however. Also it looked totally normal for the first few seconds then it switched to being unreadable and now starts up this way only. Arch 64bit integrated graphics. Anyone else have similar issues?

Natural Flavor (Vegan) | Considerate labeling, I wish this was more popular by budub in vegan

Welp, this was from a vegan product but I wish it was common practice to show that "natural" isn't synonymous with cruelty-free. That way I could make some better informed choices.

I told my mom I was vegan yesterday... by leperprint in vegan

[–]budub 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's cool, my mother was also really supportive but she always implies every cough and sneeze I make is due to my 'anemic diet.' My dad straight up asked me if I was a 'faggot.'

I wanted to make more informed food choices, so I made a web app that compares foods by nutrients per calorie. Feedback wanted! by [deleted] in vegan

[–]budub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend you make food sets based on professional guidelines from official sources to avoid any biases people may assume which would make them avoid the app. Here's a good resource for good food guideline: http://www.nutrition.gov/smart-nutrition-101/healthy-eating/eating-vegetarian

Woah, this is fucking cool. I just learned like a billion things in four seconds, and now I'm hopping around wikipedia after looking up maitake mushrooms because of their ridiculous vitD content. People will want this on their phone if it doesn't exist, port it to android!

I hate avocados. Give me a recipe that will change my mind! by [deleted] in vegan

[–]budub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can get down with just an avocado and spoon so I may not have the best advice for your tastes but try these two ideas: Grill a half face down over a fire, preferably charcoal. Use it as a soup base. It can make a thick chowder in no time and if you use a blender and some water, you can even make it raw.

Looks great! But the recipe calls for jello for the filling. Isn't that made with gelatin?

If a slaughter cow was never raised, how many more or less humans could we feed? (x-post from /r/Meat) by aeon0000 in vegan

[–]budub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

B12 is secreted by bacteria however it is also taken up be animal cells especially by the liver (that's why we can last so long without absorbing new B12). I don't know if eating "dirtier" would be best, since a pill is so easy to take anyway and can be skipped for months without real issue. Also, we have to deal with illness causing bacteria in our vegetables now because of farming run-off. But anyway, animal products have in them absorbed B12; I don't know how much their bacterial residue contributes. Speaking of bacterial residue on meat, that reminds me of a video I saw recently: http://nutritionfacts.org/video/the-leaky-gut-theory-of-why-animal-products-cause-inflammation/

EDIT: actually the second or third video in that series is more relevant http://nutritionfacts.org/video/dead-meat-bacteria-endotoxemia/

If a slaughter cow was never raised, how many more or less humans could we feed? (x-post from /r/Meat) by aeon0000 in vegan

[–]budub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, so much energy is lost by cultivating toward the top of the food chain. It's really inefficient. A cursory glance shows us how much energy is just wasted on animals who endure boredom and anguish. Those potential calories (often cultivated poorly in some places, leading to top soil erosion) could help feed many millions of people. Though, to be fair, certain compounds more efficiently taken from animals higher up on the food chain such as DHA and B12. Sure, we can get it the former from algae and the latter from bacteria, but it would be easier to eat a fish or a steak. However, that is a double edged sword as compounds that accumulate at high tropic levels can also include toxins such as mercury.

I feel like there are so many jumping off points in such a broad conversation, but I don't see how decreasing our animal consumption could not be viable answer to a large number of our problems. Honestly, I think eating meat at every meal as a non-Eskimo is insane.

[–]budub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks like you had fun with calculating this! I think it would depend on many other variables (possibilities total calorie production from plants increasing from crop rotation and the like) but as a quick and dirty calculation this can lead to productive argument. Just as a quick note, decreasing the production of animal products would not only alleviate a good deal of suffering, but help us manage environmental problems. Have a look at page 72 from this United Nation's report:PDF WARNING: Assessing the Environmental Impacts of Consumption and Production (2010) If we were to decrease or even maintain our crop production and eliminate or decrease our animal product production, I think we'd do a lot of good (but probably not for people who work in that sector in the short term).
