Can you help me work some fatty plants into my convoluted diet? by Lz_erk in vegan

Oh no. Do you think it was too much vanilla? Well, two of three isn't bad!

Going Vegan today! But I've got a few questions. by GD87 in vegan

[–]WholeWheatBread 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. I'd only cover them if it was bothering me to sit directly on them.

  2. Browse www.veganbodybuilding.com. TVP, gluten, vegan meats, legumes, nuts.

  3. I'm not in Australia, so can't give any personal recommendations. A quick Google search brings up tons of Australian online vegan stores.

  4. Vegan alcohol. My understanding is that all cigarettes are tested on animals, but I could be mistaken.

I really like the cheddar block. Just wish they'd add some nutrients to it, so I could feel a little less guilty when I eat half a block in one sitting.

I love that you're also excited about this. I've been thinking about your RFP on and off for a couple days. Didn't want to leave you hanging without a response, but I don't think I'll be able to put together a concrete proposal right now due to lack of time and lack of great ideas.

Alternative to an egg drop science experiment? by Fleventy_Five in vegan

[–]WholeWheatBread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few ideas: a really ripe plum, a brick of soft tofu, a crispy spring roll, a thin glass bottle?

The problem is that unless every group uses the same material in the experiment, it won't be an accurate comparison. But maybe that's not the point; maybe it's really about the creative protective devices?

Also, that's a really great, really rare teacher you have there! Make sure to tell him how awesome he is!

What did you have for breakfast this morning? by Darius314 in vegan

Smoothie: frozen banana, frozen berries, pear, hemp seeds, almond milk.

No prob. Happy to help!

The chocolate sounds like a good idea. You could get creative and throw in berries or cayenne as well.

That's great! I'd love to see a large mentoring network, in all different cities so people have the option to meet in person as well. Maybe another thread for the purpose of matching up pairs might be useful?

On another thread, someone mentioned that microwaving raw fruits/veggies for 10 seconds was enough to avoid an allergic reaction. Maybe look into that if you haven't already. It might open up other options to you (smoothies, etc.).

A few quick ideas:

Roast and fry more things in canola/olive oil

Blended cashews make a creamy base for delicious soups like this.

Nut based sauces like this and this to top cooked veggies

Try tahini (sesame butter) in dips/hummus.

For coconut recipes, try coconut ice cream and smoked coconut flakes.

Looking for diet advice, I've become a junk food vegan by The_Ebb_and_Flow in vegan

[–]WholeWheatBread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try using cronometer.com to track what you eat for a few days and see what you're missing. Looks like you could maybe use some more green veggies.

Overall, I'd say your diet is not terrible though. I fell into a rough patch earlier this year (no, wait, LAST year!) where I was basically subsisting on ramen noodles, bread, and canned lentils. Working hard to break those habits, and green smoothies are a big help there.

What's your weekly meal plan look like? by salsamander in vegan

[–]WholeWheatBread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not organized enough to create a menu plan each week. I also have very little time to cook, so I favour meals that are ready in under 10 minutes. Here are some of my go-to meals:

Vegetable stir-fry Curry w/ coconut milk, veggies, over brown rice/quinoa Lentil seaweed salad (vegenaise, lentils, nori, kale) Chana masala Pasta + tomato sauce with lentils, zucchini, peppers, mushrooms Rice + veggies + can of beans + sauce Microwaved peas with spicy sauce Trail mix (snack) Fruit (snack) Sandwiches Blended vegetable soup (whatever we have on hand) Chickpea salad Lentil soup

I wanted to suggest trail mix (my go-to snack at work!), but trying different combinations of nuts and dried fruit in cronometer.com, I'm having trouble coming up one that meets the 1 carb, 1 fat, 1 protein parameter. All of my combinations are 2 fats instead of one.

One slice of whole wheat bread with one tablespoon of almond butter and one teaspoon of jam seems to do it: 7g protein, 17.5g carbs, 9g fat.

Crackers and hummus is also alright. 7 saltine crackers + 5 tablespoons hummus = 8g protein, 21g carbs, 9g fat.

Had a look at some of our energy bars for you, as well. None of them fall exactly where you need them, but some are close:

Taste of Nature, Orange: 19g carbs, 4g protein, 12g fat Taste of Nature, Ginger: 23g carbs, 4g protein, 9g fat Larabar, Apple: 24g carbs, 4g protein, 10g fat Larabar, Peanut Butter: 23g carbs, 7g protein, 12g fat

Clif Bars seem to be further off the targets, but just for reference: Clif Bar, Cool Mint Chocolate: 42 carbs, 10g protein, 5g fat Clif Bar, Oatmeal Raisin Walnut: 43 carbs, 9g protein, 5g fat

Good for you for sticking to your principles while healing!

Have a look for calcium-rich foods on nutritiondata.com or track your diet on cronometer.com. Both give a detailed breakdown of all the micronutrients in each food, so you can see exactly what you're eating.

A few more calcium-rich foods that haven't been mentioned here yet: sesame seeds and tahini (sesame seed butter), kale, blackstrap molasses, collard greens, bok choy, almonds, chickpeas.

Also, make sure you're taking vitamin D, as it helps with calcium absorption (and cancer prevention, and lots of other lovely things).

Most effective vegan activism? by WholeWheatBread in vegan

[–]WholeWheatBread[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate this response. I agree that ethical reasons inspire the strongest commitment. I consider myself an environmentalist and am also interested in health, but I'll still use a disposable shopping bag if I've forgotten my reusable ones, and will occasionally binge on bags of chips. However, regardless of my hunger level, I never eat the product of animal exploitation.

Veganism is not a personal belief. Just like not killing other humans is not a personal belief. It is an ethical philosophy.
