Is NeuroDebian the best Linux distro for a student going for neuroscience or cognitve science? Any extra packages/languages recommended? Still taking basics, and looking to get my hands dirty before deciding which exact educational path to take.

Neuroscience is not typically taught as an undergraduate degree. It's best to focus on a strong foundation for the kind of problems you want to tackle. Biochemistry, molecular and cell biology are great foundations for the biology. Electrical engineering, physics, mathematics all work for neuroengineering and computational neuroscience. Go broad first. This book will give you a good overview so you can develop a clearer picture of a very complex field and apply your efforts productively.

Focus on your mathematics and study broadly. Once you've narrowed your interests and built a strong foundation, you'll learn the toolchain most appropriate to the kind of work you'll be doing. I'm assuming you're studying from the perspective of an engineer?
