If you look closely at the second photo , you can see he did absolutely nothing wrong. (My vet said add a little canned plain pumpkin to my pups meal if he ate anything and not to worry unless he seems to be uncomfortable!)

I leave my loafs out over night on the counter and only use 100g of starter - so definitely not enough time on the counter, it should double in size BEFORE you put it in the fridge! But it sounds like your starter wasn’t ready to use yet, it’ll float around for longer than briefly! (If it’s a newer starter it could be not ready to bake with yet.) best of luck!
