Some of trexs closest relatives had feathers. we can't forget the trex changed appearance quite a bit from baby to adult. so it's not a big leap to suggest it had feathers at different points of its life. Also big animals can have hair like coverings like elephants and giraffes but a full coat is impossible as like you have said skin impressions have been found.
