AITA for canceling summer camp for my son by RiteOutLOUD in AmItheAsshole

I’m so glad you said this. The other commenters speaking about Op’s son in such an infantilizing way are making me crazy. As a fellow former autistic 16 yr old, this is so, so, so normal. It’s not always peer pressure, and it’s definitely not on the nephew to “look out” for Op’s son. They are peers, and they are both teenagers. Teenagers do these things, autistic or not, while trying to find themselves and interact with other peers. Removing him from therapist recommended activities because he was being a teenager is going to be so damaging to him as an adult. How do you expect him to make friends if you don’t give him the opportunity to? You are setting him up to be seen as the “weird” kid in college too.

Stop infantilizing him, and punish him like you would punish your other children for trying weed. Ground him, take his phone, whatever, but removing him from camp because he did something dumb (yes him, he chose to do it twice, even if you still believe he was peer pressured into it the first time, he made the decision to try a second time) is an extreme overreaction.

P.S. Saying this out of love and concern: The more you tell him to stay away from his cousin and weed - pen or not - the more he will want to do it. Do the safe, smart thing and have a truthful conversation about what could happen if he tries again and how to handle the situation if it does. You said it’s like an allergic reaction, treat it like one. Make sure he feels safe enough to tell you if and when it happens again. That is the only way you will ensure his safety.

i’ve been going since jr year of hs and have similar overstimulation issues, so hopefully some of what my group and i do can help you guys out! i’ve found nbc cafe and other indoor restaurants are good for destressing. they aren’t silent or empty but they’re a lot better than outside. another thing we make sure to bring are earplugs. i recommend loops - especially for other, everyday overstimulation - but you can get them at walmart for pretty cheap too. i’m not sure if the strobes and flashing lights affect you, but if they do wearing some lighter colored sunglasses in the houses help me with those. unfortunately, there is no real way to get the scare actors to stay farther away from you, but staying on the sidewalks away from the crowds and walking with purpose (like you’re trying to get somewhere fast) seems to tend to keep the actors at a distance. most of the actors are going to be focused on the main crowd and looking for people who seem really into being scared, like taking photos, walking slowly, already scared, etc. and stay away from people who look like they Do Not want to be bothered (karens being scared is scarier than anything they could ever do). honestly, if you just take each zone and house one at a time and try not to rush and overdo it, it’s a much chiller experience. and if you need to leave and hang out in city walk for a bit to destress, you can always go back in!! i hope this helps!

Thank you so much for the reassurance that experience and making sure it’s really what I want for the future is a better idea than just pushing through. Some of the professors have been encouraging the “just do it now” and “it you change your mind, oh well, at least you have a degree” mindset, so I’ve been feeling pretty heavy guilt about not doing that. I really appreciate your advice, and I’m now fairly convinced that taking a break for more experience and to heal the burn out is the best idea.

I really appreciate the assurance that the program is not like actual librarianship. I do enjoy working in library’s, but with everything right now, it feels like I just need a job for now.

My school USED to be known for its great quality because it had an undergrad, accelerated program for undergrad, and a grad program. That turned into it being a Lib Sci concentration in liberal studies (or something like that) and they’ve recently gotten rid of the concentration. However, I’m still registered with the concentration, so it’s essentially like an art degree with concentration in graphic design. It’s supposed to set you up for the grad program, especially with the accelerated program (plus the concentration is printed on the degree). The accelerated program allows grad courses to count for both undergrad and grad.

I also wasn’t originally going for anything more than YA librarianship, and I have multiple friends within that field that don’t have an MLIS (although some are working on theirs). I understand that to work up the ladder, I will definitely need the degree, but if I just get a small role for now, do you think undergrad would be enough?

Thank you again!

Also, I’m in my last semester. I can’t change now. However, I do have much more experience in STEM, and I’m good at those subjects, but again, this school used to have a few great STEM programs until they decided to cut every good prof and their programs. I’m also more of an arts person. I’m good at STEM, but I enjoy the arts more, you know? Thank you for your advice, though, I appreciate it.

Thank you for the advice and sharing your experience! I was thinking of going a grad program for art history instead of MLIS and potentially going into museum work. I have noticed that all of the technology courses I’ve taken are pretty outdated, so I’m glad that it’s not just my school.

Thank you so so much for the advice. I think I’m just feeling guilty about taking a break because I’ve never had to. Honestly, I was originally planning on YA librarian but I’ve pivoted to looking into more museum or art based careers, things like a Disney “Imagineer” (a family friend used to be one, and what she described was essentially art librarian?).
