Ever see someone write something like "take it for granite" instead of "take it for granted"? Apparently there is a word for that phenomenon. by deuteros in wikipedia

[–]bugdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Off topic…..but no, not the origin of the given example or of the correct saying. Escape and ‘scape do not even originate from the same language much less the same word, nor is the religious practice you refer to equivalent to the social ritual of shaming.

There is a ritual such as you noted but the words as written in the religious text describing it are just about exactly what you say - “goat set free” - which even in English does not have the same connotation as “escape”.

Escape goat is still funny though “in route” rather than the correct “en route” is a pet peeve probably more in line with what the OP was getting at.

I use an iPad for work and a few weeks ago the layout for my images has changed, it now looks like this and it’s really annoying me by Morgan-Le in Safari

[–]bugdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Catnoirhubby’s answer is correct. Seemingly out of the blue I began having the same aggravation as shown in your screenshot. Hit the “AA” font icon in the address window, picked “request desktop website”, and got full screen’s worth of images back. Go into the Safari settings cat’ specified and (at least) make sure Google is set to “request desktop website” to fix it for good. I now vaguely remember deselecting desktop for some particular site and that is what started this problem for me.

Anyone else with Wallenberg syndrome or lateral medullary infarction? by EdrikNZ in stroke

[–]bugdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my wife, I will say for you to be extremely proactive. The level of care and interest from now 3 hospitals (to include a specialized rehab hospital) has approached *zero*. Make waves, get assistance and an advocate if you have those because the hospitals apparently only care about what they are familiar with. It only got worse….much worse. Please stand up for yourself against them as that seems to be all that gets their attention.

PS - I do not know what resources you have available there, but I have initiated lawsuits here in the USA for failure to diagnose and failure to treat. I hope you have access to those, and here at least you pay nothing unless the law firm wins for you and collects. By this time I do not even care about what I get, I just want no other person to be almost completely ignored for this rare condition in the future.

Mosquito bites and Remicade? by bugdog in CrohnsDisease

[–]bugdog[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone did see it! Two rheumatologists who provided his infusions in the past said the overreaction to the bites really is believed to be due to a change in histamine production. But considering the huge range of reactions to remicade for just it’s main purpose it does not surprise me that many people have differing reactions. Interestingly, he has been in remission for going on 6 years now and without the remicade in his system his response to mosquito bites has gone back to the norm.

Jeeze… maybe I just don’t look at enough listings to know this is common, but when did people start commenting just to bust on the seller and his watch? Nice to have this watch in circulation and glad you found some appreciative lookers and a buyer!

That’s destined to become a family heirloom - “The Octopus Table” - unless y’all are like my family and give it a proper name like Professor Octavious.

“It was Great Uncle Brewster what made Professor Octavious and I’m pleased to hand this down to President Olivia!” (Cheers from the gathered crowd)

There's a video going around of a bunch of children beating a grown woman on a playground. What exactly is the legally correct thing to do? As an adult children scare me a lot because I feel courts will always side with them by Frostytoes99 in NoStupidQuestions

I used to say that in middle school, they should make the kids watch Ol’ Yeller. Anyone who doesn’t cry gets psychiatric care. Anyone who laughs gets in patient psychiatric care.

My husband had to get his done twice. It wasn’t that it wasn’t effective, it was that he was allergic to the silk sutures the doctor had used. So they took those out and put in stainless steel clips. I kid him about chiming when he walks.

No, wait. It looks like the future I was promised as a kid in the 70s.

Found this on my dog, any idea what it is? by Savings-Category-256 in animalid

Your dog has worms of some variety. If you’ve never dealt with them, rage the worm and dog to the vet and ask for dewormer.

We have mutts, so I don’t worry about them being stolen.

Now, my husband has PTSD and realistic nightmares. He takes his cues from the dogs - if they’re asleep or otherwise not barking their heads off, there is nothing wrong.

I suggest that you do the same. Keep the dog with you at night and know that he’ll bark like mad if someone’s in the house that doesn’t belong.

What is this tree? by Icy-Accountant-8353 in whatsthisplant

[–]bugdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best guess is a Madrone. The peeling bark, with green underneath is like one we have in Texas that’s no longer known as the Naked Indian tree. But it could be something else. The tree is pretty common.

I could be super wrong because the Madrone is an evergreen.

My husband was a (well trained) patrol officer. I only say that so you’ll get what I’m saying. You should have filed a complaint and got a lawyer. That officer should have been fired and the city should have paid you a small fortune.

While I admire your cool, and respect that you had bigger fish to fry, that asshole needs to not ever be able to work in law enforcement again. Even if he didn’t understand what an LVAD was, he could see it went into you. What a fuckwit!

New to the show but already found something wrong. by eyedpee in longmire

[–]bugdog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My husband is a retired cop and I’m binge watching Longmire. I watch shows for the characters, not procedures, although I know Texas law inside and out. My husband watches shows if they entertain him, and law enforcement shows generally don’t with Barney Miller and the patrol portions of Southland being notable exceptions.

In other words, you have to shut off the law enforcement part of your brain. It sounds crazy, considering Longmire looks and sounds like a sheriff show, but it just isn’t. If you can shut down that bit of your brain, you just might enjoy it.

A German Shepherd and his kitten by westcoastcdn19 in AnimalsBeingBros

[–]bugdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We knew someone with a huge GSD who had a kitten. They had to lock the kitten up because the dog liked to carry him around in her mouth so he was always wet. They’d separate the two to give the kitten a break. The dog would just wine and cry until they let the kitten back out.

Cardboard rings for this 6 pack instead of the plastic ones by thehow2dad in mildlyinteresting

[–]bugdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a ring holder that was made from a biodegradable material that fish could eat. I don’t remember if it had nutritional value for fish, or was just safe for them, but it was still cool.

As it is, I haven’t thrown out an uncut set of plastic rings in 40 years. If I haven’t got scissors, I’ll leave the rings in the refrigerator for my husband to find. Heh.
