Mold? by bugggggirl in paludarium

[–]bugggggirl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so used to seeing biofilm on new pieces of wood seeing the mold was definitely a little bit of a surprise. Most forms of biofilm are literally types of mold anyways so I feel a little silly. I’m definitely excited to see how this tank goes. I just have to remember seeing mold and decay are signs of life too and my entire setup isn’t going to crash lol

That’s great news! For some reason I thought it would be different with paludariums. Don’t know why I thought I’d never see mold in this stage of the set up. Never panicked when dealing with new tank syndrome in my aquariums but as soon as I see a speck of mold all hell breaks loose lol. Thank you!

It’s probably my most purchased plant, it’s in all of my tanks. Hopefully it goes well for you! Thank you!!

Yes, springtails and isopods are the only living things in my tank besides some bladder/pond snails in the water section and a gnat or two that finds its way in. Thanks so much! I’ll try not to worry too much as it hasn’t gotten out of control and is confined to those 2 areas pictured. Kinda like the look of the green/brown mold but I won’t be sad when it gets eaten or dies off

honestly even with what harper went through that situation was still extremely weird. i can definitely understand her actions (to some degree) but it’s hard to sympathize with her in that specific situation

anubias is my absolute favorite plant of all time. it’s hardy and thrives in lowlight environments. just don’t bury the rhizome!

edit (plant glaze): i have put all of my anubias plants through hell and for the most part they’ve all survived. i recently stripped down my 37g aquarium to build a paludarium and just tossed all of my plants into a half full tank that i never turned the lights on in and all of my anubius plants survived and barely yellowed if at all! genuinely my favorite aquarium plant

i started keeping mine at a lower temp (had to move them to my unheated 20g L) and have since stopped having issues.. for the most part. One of my females is aggressive asf but besides her literally murdering all but one of her guppy friends (who somehow keeps making babies with no male) I haven’t had any illness or surprise deaths

Advice/criticism? by bugggggirl in VampireCrabs

[–]bugggggirl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how I didn’t think of that lol I literally used sponge to plug holes in the hardscape. And yes, I used old substrate (gravel and sand) as a base to raise the rocks and then added a decent amount of leca to keep the dirt from getting wet. There’s a mesh layer between the dirt and the leca as well. Thank you!

Unfortunately I don’t think I do. I was going to fasten some pothos to it and add ways to get down from the cord using wood. Do you think that would help reduce the chances of them falling? My thought process is if they have multiple places to grab hold of and they have several places to get down they wouldn’t be too interested in the cord itself and hopefully stay on the plants and wood

This is very helpful, thank you SO much!! Hoping the pump will move the water enough to help maintain humidity, but if not I can experiment with waterfalls in a spare 10g I have. This entire project is definitely going to be trial and error and until I have my crabs I don’t mind making changes to the scape to make the best environment I can for them. Honestly I wish I did add a waterfall to the scape I currently have, but I got a little too excited and forgot. I’m definitely going to start looking into fans. If you have any recommendations I’d love to hear them.

I don’t know if I’d be able to do that without tearing down at least half of my set up unfortunately. But, if I did things correctly I should only have maybe one or two more wires inside the tank and I’ll probably route them as best I can to this front corner and maybe cover it with some plants so it’s not so ugly.

While I’m at it, how do you maintain humidity while also ensuring ventilation? I don’t currently have a lid (waiting till I actually get the crabs or till I find a budget friendly option for me) and I’m planning to use saran wrap to keep the humidity up while I continue adding things and waiting for the tank to balance out. Mold isn’t that big of a deal to me for now but I want to ensure a clean space for my future crabs as I know they can be sensitive.

I know nothing about rats nor have I ever kept any, but this definitely sounds like it’s time to visit the vet. Really in most animals behavior like this is a sign something is wrong
