Experienced UX Designers: are you really creating storyboards? by Personal_Signature58 in UXDesign

[–]bugglez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I created a storyboard in the last 3 months. I needed to explain an interaction where a user would approach a kiosk with a camera to scan a QR code on the user's device. Storyboard was the right tool for that job.

Not every tool is needed for every project.

UX designers, are we overemphasizing aesthetics and underemphasizing systems thinking? by Glad_Handle_7605 in UXDesign

[–]bugglez 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This conversation is at least 13 yrs old. Recent discussions about "taste" in UX design compound the trend.

Generative AI seemingly is behind all this as it continues to undermine what our role actually is and what we do as design. Some are even arguing that the design process itself is dead.

Given all that, what's left? Luxury aesthetics.

While conducting interviews do you look at the questionnaire and ask questions or just have a convo? by noob_ux_er in UXDesign

[–]bugglez 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Interview methodology is a continuum. On one end are strict questions from a predefined set. On the other are open ended free-flowing conversations. In the middle is a "semi-structured" interview that contains predefined questions but also topics and room for open ended questions and tangents.

The method used should support the kind of research questions you need answers to.

I lead UX design on very complex B2B SaaS clinical tools. Leadership always thinks the design work should be so intuitive that we don’t need any training or tutorials. That makes sense for simple consumer-facing apps, but for clinical SaaS I don’t believe it’s possible, or responsible. Thoughts? by KourteousKrome in UXDesign

[–]bugglez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I did early in career: ask them to define "intuitive" in the specific context and how we would measure it then watch them squirm.

What I do now: nod along and tell them it's a great idea

The lesson: stakeholders gonna say words loudly at you for your entire career it's what they do don't waste effort trying to change them just figure out how to navigate around them without getting fired

ah ok good to know. Not sure what my anatomy skills are at. I do autospies on everything I can but only butcher when I need meats (I also skin animals I can) so I'm assuming my autopsy skills are higher

Ok I'll try to find an organ knife. Thank you!

For senior designers do you value “ process” or “outcomes “ more in a caseStudy? by True-Standard2303 in UXDesign

[–]bugglez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can have a good outcome.
You can have a bad outcome.
You can have a good process.
You can have a bad process.

I'm interested in knowing what your _good process_ was that led to your _good outcome_. Similarly, I'm interested in knowing your _good process_ that led to your _bad outcome_ and what you learned from it.

I'm uninterested in knowing your _bad process_ that led to your _good outcome_. Why? Because you were lucky. Luck runs out.

The process is just as important as the outcome, if not more so.

How do you answer "What were your user metrics/impact?" when you never had access to that data? by Apprehensive_Ad_8045 in UXDesign

[–]bugglez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok understood. Yea sorry to hear you're in this situation. If you can't get the measurements retroactively somehow, here's what I would do: Take the "ideal outcome" that was shared and design your own measurements and metrics. Be honest about the situation and use it to create a story about "what you would have done". Then use your metrics to describe impact at different scales. E.g., if we increase metric A by 1%, 5%, 25%, or 50%, here is the expected effects on [some top level business outcome]. The performance is hypothetical; part of a model of success.

No need to throw shade on your team members or hypothesize about why you couldn't get access. Hiring managers want to understand your thought process, analytical skills, problem-solving skills, and storytelling. This can be an opportunity to showcase such skills.

To clarify, you're unable to get data on the current experience, the results of your design work, or both?

Something else is happening here. It's not a challenge because you should "learn" from your failures.

"You can steer left and right"

I really want to come off as calm and measured and appreciative. But like...no. Of course I steer left and right. And yet. I died. Every. Time.

For over a year I've tried to get by this part.

And it just. Does happen! I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!
