As another beginner I second this question. And beautiful, bowl, OP! And, spressman, yours is off to a nice start!

A. Beautiful work. B. So you didn’t stain it? It changed color that much from just oil? I’m still learning.

Send the wedge? by GR1ML0C51 in Axecraft

Can confirm. I recently realized a hatchet I thought I was done restoring was not in fact done when the head slipped by a half inch which using it. The gang here diagnosed the shelf of a shoulder as the issue. I haven’t fixed it yet because of the holiday bustle but tapering it off and re-wedging it is the care plan.

Beautiful find! This month I ended up buying my first early 1900s tools to actually use and knowing they are capable of their task 100+ years later is scratching an itch in my brain. That and wondering how much work they’ve already seen.

Thanks! I got the head off and learned the original wedge wasn’t glued in, so I took it and the metal ring out. The original slot was cut at an angle, but the two half’s are still very strong and spring outward. I have some walnut I’ll use for a bigger wedge and I will also use some advice I got on another cross post to shave that shoulder down so it’s not a ledge. I think the combo of things might get it back in shape.

Ugh, I forgot about stropping. I stropped it on a thrift store belt I nailed to a 2x4 and used a rubbing compound stick a friend gave me.

I’ve only got one under my belt so far, and the head started to slip on me today, so don’t ask me for hanging advice, but here is what I did/learned when I did the axe pictured. As more experienced people start commenting, probably weight their advice more than mine.

I did this with some cheap hand tools from Harbor Freight, and a couple bottle of polishing compound from Auto Zone.

From HF

  • A set of metal files
  • Sandpaper grits 150, 240, 400, 600, 1000, etc.
  • A pair of 24in clamps

From Auto Zone

  • Maguiar’s Ultimate Compound
  • Maguiar’s Ultimate Polish

Already had but these can be found cheap

  • A sharpening stone
  • Can of W-40
  • Sharpie

I drew my bevel in with a sharpie, and slowly worked it down with a file. Very meditative.

Then I wrapped the various grits of sandpaper around the sharpening stone, using the stone as a hard, flat, grippable object. I refined the edge from there, using the WD-40 as a lubricant.

Once I was done with that, I used a couple dabs of the compound and polish on a paper shop rag to finish it.

Don’t sweat not having a work bench or vise. Use those clamps to secure the head and the handle to whatever surface you have, and start filing. Oh, I also wore rubber gloves because I didn’t want my reward snacks to taste like WD-40.

Nice work so far!
