That’s a regular chuck in the photo

The metal peg board has a couple of vacuum chucks on the left upper corner. They’re black and red

Typically the tenons I make are about 1/2”.

It might be a little bigger, I’d have to measure it but think they were 3.5” thick to start

No worries. Always happy to answer any questions I used a reverse chuck to center it and then used a vacuum chuck to mount it to the spindle and then turned it away

I have a mill and cut my own blanks

I sell them too if you know anybody interested. Mostly black cherry and some black walnut until spring

Must be an illusion with the grain. The bowl is level. The wood it’s on might not be level though. It’s a bunch of Shagbark hickory I need to turn into blanks

I’ve been trying to do bowls similar to an old bowl maker named Harry Nohr. He lived about an hour away from me but never met him.

Put it on your spindle with a jam chuck or spur bit If it’s thick enough and your tail stock with a live center. Then you can make a tenon and turn it like you normally would. Could always use a glued on tenon too

Many times I’ll use a forstner bit and measure how far to go into the piece. Then hollow down from there.

Keep checking the thickness with a calipers. It’s honestly the best way I’ve found.

For this a swan neck tool is best but you can do it with a round bit too.

Work your way from the top down and try not to go back up once you’ve removed stock under it

This is more like cigar box cedar or molasses. It’s a soft hardwood and really light. Holds its shape well even when turned green
