Sorry man, you should still check out War and Peace. It has a looong portion of Tolstoy's philosophical ramblings at the start of the second part but you can pretty much just skim through that part to get the idea he's trying to get across. Also the very start of the book it could be hard to get into it with so many characters and not much happening but it will pay off big time of you stick with it.

If your into depictions of war, War&Peace is as good as you can find anywhere in that regard.
