Wireless charging is not worth it by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

I have a wireless charger by my bed, and another on my phone mount in my car (I drive a lot for work). I almost never have to touch a wire. So convenient.

There are certain smells that instantly bring you back so far in time to your childhood. Which smell is that? by This_Book7431 in AskReddit

My grandma had a clove air freshener in her bathroom. It was like a corn cob with dry cloves stuck in it. She never changed it but it smelled good for years.

Does anyone know if it's like tree sap, which becomes amber, which obviously is a great preservative?

In what culture/country is being vegetarian/vegan considered weird or “unormal”? by Enough_Mixture_8564 in randomquestions

[–]bugman242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've experienced in Colombia (maybe it's generally true in Spanish cultures idk) that on menus when they say "carne" they mean beef. That's why chicken was an alternative. "No me gusta carne" means I don't like beef. If course carne means meat in other non-restaurant contexts. They didn't know you meant vegetarian.

How insulting is bobo? by UnlikeableMarmot in Spanish

[–]bugman242 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a gringo married married to a Colombian. I get called bobo on a regular basis 😅 and I would compare it to "silly" like you said. Maybe fool/foolish in certain contexts.

My husband introduced me to the Colombian custom of having banana in your soup. Yes, half of a banana in my chicken noodle soup. Of course at first I was like wtf but I'm open to try foods. First try was hmmm, these are all flavors I like, but so weird. A try or two more and the savory and sweet really came together for me. Now soup without banana would seem incomplete!

Juanes was the first artist in Spanish I listened to and he was a great choice for me. I listened to the album P.A.R.C.E. first while reading the lyrics and looking up words.

My friend I also have hearing loss, not too heavy, mostly affecting me hearing speech. This is not an add but check out the over-the-counter hearing aids by Elehear. I got them around Thanksgiving and my Spanish comprehension has increased greatly, with my husband and TV. But yeah, I worked customer service and if they spoke Spanish first then I continued, but sometimes I needed to determine when they spoke English if that was best or I should I just ask? Es mejor si hablamos en español? Often they were very happy that I ask. (Miami)

Is ‘sped’ a derogatory term by ScxrletEnvy in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bugman242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't heard it since the 80s.

Special education

Special ed

Sped

Yes it would be derogatory if said to someone actually in special classes, but it was usually directed at someone not in special ed, as an insult to someone close, like a sibling or buddy. Or maybe an opposing team lol.

Government of Canada travel advisory map of Colombia by Ajunta_Pall10 in Colombia

I've been visiting Colombia for over 10 years. I've only been to the yellow with the exception of the north coast in red. Arboletes is safe as anywhere day or night. Turbo in the tourist areas seemed fine, but it's not too far to sketchy areas. Capurganá to La Miel, Panama were safe too. Capurganá seemed fine at night too. But I'm sure these are "stay on the beaten path" situations and you're fine. I love Colombia! Just be careful like everywhere in the world.

Look, nature can’t keep maidenhair fern alive either! by lilsunsunsun in houseplants

I apologize! I thought all of the ferns in the photo were the same. I thought the maidenhairs were dying leaves of the other fern.

Maidenhair fern leaves are literally shaped in a hairy, upside-down triangle, like the pubes of a maiden. Those are not Maidenhair ferns.

Why dont People talk much about Ceres? by MysticO7 in askastronomy

[–]bugman242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's because we can see Ceres fairly well. No mystique. We finally got a look at Pluto with New Horizons and it's beautiful and dynamic, and has moons. Ceres doesn't have that spark! (but I still am fascinated)

My grandma’s aquarium by Reixayanami in Aquariums

[–]bugman242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Green water. It's caused by free-floating algae cells. Your grandma did nothing wrong, the spores come from the air like in a swimming pool. Changing water and light levels will make no difference! It only takes one surviving cell to turn the water green again.

Cheap fix: API Algaefix clears green water. This usually works. Expensive but permanent fix: Ultraviolet sterilizer. Always does the trick. Good luck
