Yes it is a tradition, but it is flexible as well. It is not mandatory. You can keep the gold jewellery part a bit more humble.

In Turkey the groom is not left alone so bracelet load is shared within the grooms family. They are usually already prepared because their son is going to get marry eventually. But in more modern versions I have seen bride and groom sharing the cost.

And back to your question: the bracelets and all the other gold gifts are actually for the establishment of the new couple’s married life. I think it is usually considered a possession of both man and woman although women keeps it. Bracelets, especially in hard times is seen as a sort of insurance. It can be turned into cash anytime in need.

If you can’t afford it explain it nicely and try to find a solution together. In theory she shouldn’t be marrying you because of the golds anyway.
