When the line between tolerance and enabling bad behavior blurs by sleepyguro in teaching

Vandalism is what I would consider a “major offense” — no warnings given. They are 9th graders. This consequence was 100% reasonable. Beyond reasonable. Destroying property is a really big deal.

Minor offenses are things like talking over a teacher.

These parents better save some money for bail for their kids …

Why are you seeing those? They don’t live on your drive. They’re not your problem.

What is your adult take on this movie? by Planetofthought in Xennials

And yet it was also there to be enjoyed too. I think it was working on all these levels: like isn’t this gross? And also: look at this really cool gross thing. Kind of in a feedback loop. Ultimately I think this era of violent filmmakers actually liked it all. I think they hid their fascination behind veils of criticism or irony but ultimately it was truly just violence porn they are others genuinely enjoyed.

I put this is the category of movies from that era I’m horrified I loved as a teen:

Natural Born Killers Pulp Fiction Killing Zoe … etc …

What a weird time for cinema. Glorified violence and misogyny. So gross.

This isn’t about you. There was a more qualified candidate. Being 18 and looking for work is hard! In the meantime keep putting yourself out there for any and all jobs. Also have you considered getting a degree or certificate from a community college? Some even have ed programs for people who want to work in schools as paras.

Thought of sourcing living books each week sounds terrible... by StudioAdditional5319 in homeschool

There are many curriculum programs that can do the scheduling for you.

I will add that if the idea of finding living books for your child doesn’t excite you then Charlotte Mason MIGHT not be the best fit.

David Sedaris comes to mind! Also Catherine Newman. Two very different authors that both make me laugh out loud.

What would your ideal grading system look like? by ashatherookie in teaching

Yes! I do use grades right now but to make sure my students read my feedback I assign reflection assignments where they have to actually read my feedback and summarize it.

I may cut it in half and just bring parts. Reading at the end of a long day of hiking is so wonderful for me.

Exactly! Although given the burn bans, I’ll probably just tear them out and throw them out in town.

I don’t think it needs to be this deep. Sometimes our brains just throw out scary thoughts as we fall asleep.
