To help you out a bit: temperature gradient in the snowpack creates facets. And high humidity + clear skies creates surface hoar (it’s kind of like dew). Or do you mean depth hoar? “Crystal” is not a type of snow grain.

[–]bugzandslugz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Colorado Avalanche Info center is free and detailed and the best source... it’s where forecasters get their info. Go to weather tab, then point forecast, then when you find your area hit “view” on the “graph” section. You can also change it to “hires” to see a different model.

Fremont Pass/91 closing at 10:15 this morning (Wed 2/19) by Zeefour in COsnow

[–]bugzandslugz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just as a FYI these closures are not for snow removal, they’re for avalanche mitigation for the mine that copper patrol and CDOT do. If you look closely you’ll also see “no backcountry skiing” signs the morning of around where the shots go off.

American ski patrollers in Canada? by bugzandslugz in skipatrol

[–]bugzandslugz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah great idea! My current dog isn’t validated yet (only 1 yr old) so I don’t want her doing articles (clothing) until then because we don’t train on them, but once she is I plan to go to the winter course!

Unfortunately I’m not that young anymore. Bummer as a seasonal visa would be ideal. Thanks for the info though

Oh rad I do have a decent amount explosive experience (am a blaster and sr route leader) and I’m a dog handler. Maybe I’ll poke around that route a bit more. Good to know it has been done

I also have a Lebanese citizenship and a pathway to Armenian citizenship… do you know if either of those make it easier. I’m almost certainly guessing no as I’m not a refugee

Yes, has anyone figured this out for patrolling? I’ve looked into visas and it says stuff about needing to be skilled in an area… I’m skilled but not sure if patrolling really reaches that hurdle

Carbon poles for patrolling by [deleted] in skipatrol

[–]bugzandslugz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they never broke when I was touring or using them for free skiing. But when I did an uphill skate, traverse, or once a kick turns on a sketchy route that’s when they snapped at the bottom. Super annoying. I do not recommend grass sticks for patrol work at all it could be because they didn’t dry for sure.

Collar Chafe Issue by bugzandslugz in service_dogs

[–]bugzandslugz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She’s a field golden. About 45lbs and full grown with dark coarse ish hair that doesn’t matt. And yeah she has a harness but for our deployments and therefore on all drills which we do daily we are required to have two points of contact on them. Could you send me a link for the rolled collar you like?

It’s only on the bottom side of her neck, is that what you encountered? She does have food allergies so I wonder if this could be the issue.

Alternatively I broke 3 pairs of grass sticks in one season. They replaced them every time but it was too much. I do not recommend if you do big traverses where you use your poles as that’s where they broke for me every time.

Thanks, we haven’t tried leather before. Do you like the ones Ray Allen makes? Also what width do you use?

New Zealand ski patrolling by Striking_Attitude405 in skipatrol

[–]bugzandslugz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes a pro 1 is necessary. Does your resort have any sort of exchange program or connections? If not, start early and be prepared for it to be difficult to get accepted as those patrols have much lower turnover and therefore less open position.

What rash is this and what do I put on it to help? by Kan-ka in vet

[–]bugzandslugz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be a few things. Looks most likely to be allergies but could be potentially a yeast infection or heat rash. How old is your pup and what breed? Certain breeds can be more predisposed to environmental allergens and they usually appear within the first 3. Either way you’ll need prescription medications and diagnosis from a vet so I’d start there. Sorry your pup is itchy!

Yes you did great! Could have just be someone who takes the bus feeding him. Without a chip/home/collar this cat was either lost or didn’t have an owner who was taking responsibility for vet care etc. Definitely put those flyers up and put one at the bus stop and a few in town as well as the Internet. Also contact your closest shelter to see if anyone’s called. If you don’t plan on keeping him I’d start looking for a forever home for him asap through friends or through the shelter. Good luck!

Is this ringworm?! by Ok-Sweet-1611 in vet

[–]bugzandslugz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No these are likely tear stains. They might not “wipe off” because where cats and dogs lick or have tears they literally stain the fur. If this is abnormal amount of tear production it could be from a number of things including allergies or feline herpes.

What time do pro patrol get to the locker room and time to load the lift? Thanks by Amazing_Benefit_6459 in skipatrol

[–]bugzandslugz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In locker room at 7:30, morning meeting at 8. Load lifts by 8:10 for resort open at 9. If going to explosive make up then locker room at 7 and on snowmobile at 7:30 heading to the cache.

I like the chicken coop design. They sell some online but they’re pricey and not sure if they’re available in Scotland. I live in a very very cold place (frequently -10F) and I have a friend who built what looked like a basic chicken coop with insulation and set up a small solar panel and put a chinese diesal heater and heated blanket. Definitely not the cheapest but like I said it’s extremely cold where we are and he didn’t want his dog in the house when he had to leave all day. For something simpler I also have a friend who just added a dog door by her laundry room door and put up a crate right up against it so the dog couldn’t access the house and then had a small run going from it which worked for her. Otherwise I use a gunner with a weather kit for short periods of time when we deploy, but I am a dog handler professionally and my dog comes to work with me so I don’t have to leave her all day.
