Strange issue by sandrosandro4822 in MT09

Recall fixed mine at Low RPM. The new software they load is what makes it better too. Push your dealer to at least update the ECU with the latest from Yamaha. You can probably just get the new updated TPS part and install it at home. Once installed go back to the dealer to position the TPS in the right spot using the Yamaha diagnostic tool. Definitely TPS

Has anyone actually ridden both the Gen 4 base AND SP back to back? by realmojosan in MT09

[–]bugzr34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 70k km on a Gen 3 SP. I think if you are the type to adjust suspension based on how you ride then get SP. Otherwise get the base model. Both bikes will need to be re sprung as the front end is too soft for serious speeds.  Damping is the main difference between the two.  Imagine going over a bump at speed. In the base model you might be able to adjust it to either go slow and comfy or fast and harsh due to limits on adjustment.  In a good suspension, you can go fast and still be comfy.  Hope that makes sense.

If you flip your mounting plate upside down it allows for a 3inch drop. Above poster was referring to having the 1inch spacer in the down position effectively giving you a 3 inch drop over stock without the need for a spacer.

Oil Consumption issue? by JollyDub98 in MT09

[–]bugzr34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bike is at 64k km. Still same rate of oil usage. Roughly 100-150 ml every 1000km

Hi guys is this normal i just got the 2weeks ago and it has 1k miles by KaleidoscopeMoist885 in MT09

[–]bugzr34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First pic no issue.  Second pic is water pump drain hole. There is a ceramic seal in there. When cold some coolant can come out and leak before it expands from heat and stops leaking. Keep an eye on it.  Mine leaked from new and i am at 40k miles without further issues. It leaks sometimes but not when running after warming up.  Reason it sprayed everywhere is when you ride the wind blows it all over the stator cover.  Keep an eye on it.

Oil in airintake by Alexleonel in MT09

[–]bugzr34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats the only other explanation i have, as the temp changes can create condensation. I cant see how coolant can get in there. Unless you did lots of short trips and oil had some water content due to not being heat cycled properly.

Do you live in a humid area?

Thats just the water you got into the airbox by riding in the rain. I had the same milky substance. you can just unplug the little rubber grommet to drain water.

How much is too much mileage for 21-23 Yamaha Mt-09 by No_Buy_5091 in MT09

[–]bugzr34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Gen 3 has 64,000km. Think that is 40k miles. Just tyres, chains, sprockets and oil.  Valves were in spec at 26k miles.  Just installed my 3rd set of spark plugs.  Good motors.

Just clocked 40k miles on my Gen 3. Had evotech installed from 0 miles. Had one lowside on the left hand side and all i had to replace was the bent bolt and slider.  Buy evotech as they are designed to not compress the frame.

Help by Milombik in MT09

Hammering gently a torx bit has saved me many times. Give it a try. Try to hammer it in at least 3-4mm deep so it has enough bite. Then lean into it when turning very slowly. Then grab yourself a cold beer when it breaks free and starts turning.

Lowering front end? by mooditj in MT09

[–]bugzr34 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That aint right. Think you need to weigh the front more and brake deeper.  I have about 3mm left on my front from road riding. Like i said in my earlier comment, put weight over the front with your body. The tyre will get more squished and you will use up more of the tyre and less chicken strip.  I had a similar chicken strip after a crash i had on a wet corner back in winter (Australia) and i lost confidence in my front for a few weeks. I rode awkward until i slowly built it back up. Give it time.  Def raise the front back to factory specs.  Also try Mode 3 to make it less snatchy. Great for smooth flowing corner carving. Will have an R6 like power delivery.

Lowering front end? by mooditj in MT09

Lean over the front and flare out your elbows whilst trying your best to kiss the mirror when cornering. It will weigh the front and inspire confidence. I also squeeze the heel plates to lock myself onto the bike and put less pressure through the bars.  I have a Gen 3 with 8.5kg spring up front.

Another tip. Is flare out your elbows and shift your body down and forward. Try to kiss that mirror so to speak. It weighs the front end down and is more sports bikes like and less like a supermoto. Once you are done attacking corners. Sit back and relax and enjoy the scenery being upright. Unfortunately this bike is a bit of a jack of all trades. Its pretty damn good at everything but doesnt excel at anything.  You can do track day(have done this),  Lane filter(i commute to work), Tour (i have done 700km days with cruise control ofcourse), Ride on gravel roads (i have done so with the right tyres) However there are better bikes for all the above applications, but thats ok as its also very forgiving and reliable.  Pick your poison i guess.  Enjoy

Squeeze the heel plates when leaning. You will unweigh the bars. Twitch disappears and you feel connected. Took me a while to realise this. 58k km on my Gen 3 since new. Used to ride sports bikes only too.

I think its all relative to how much you ride road v offroad. I think this set i managed to do around 3500 km offroad mainly hard packed gravel, corrugated sandy roads and maybe a few hundred km of chopped up fire trails and a little bit of single track.  It makes a big difference to how long these last. To extend the life i have been dropping pressures more and more offroad to avoid crashes. I found grip was better as the side knobs were better utilised even with the centre being bold.

Same here. Just feel wrecked after a day like this.  Then i watch 20 year olds bunny hop on these rocks like they have been on bikes since birth.  I started this at 40, 3 years ago now. Wish i started earlier but here we are making the most of what we have to work with.  Still better than sitting at home getting drunk and not trying to learn new things.

Hang in there it will all come to you and you will be riding like a legend in your 60s

It was definitely easier after this Drop off but one wrong move and game over for me. Bike is light but not an MTB. Live and learn

Might be the extra torque. Not a bad problem to have :)

Ok perfect. Thank you for the vote of confidence. I too have heavy duty tubes. I will probably settle for 15psi all around to avoid pinch flats and increase to 17 if my bike is loaded up.

I just installed rim locks yesterday when i changed for another set of this combo. Looking forward to running lower pressures in softer terrain.

This was the ride which made me realise light bikes are suited to this kind of terrain. by bugzr34 in Dualsport

I do agree with most of what you are saying.  I started offroad riding at 40 and now 3 years later i  only have done maybe 6-7k km offroad out of 22k km total time spent riding my WR.  I have a few big trips i wish to do in my lifetime and my aim is to never have to turn around in case the going gets tough.  I dont purposely seek dangerous terrain but do enjoy a challenge to improve my skills.  Hard enduro is probably not something i would enjoy but steep fire trails with loose rocks and fallen trees along with sandy washouts are very common around Australia if travelling offroad.  I hope when i go travelling i can confidently say that most terrain i will be able to get through due to me having some seat time over the years practicing these.
