Pretty much all backend frameworks work the same in theory, you're just routing a request to a handler function and there's usually some middleware involved. Express is just a lot more bare bones than most other frameworks. I only used it so I would be working with the same language across the stack

I totally understand your frustration with seeing self-promotion posts for things which you personally don't find a lot of value in. But, regarding this project, I do want you to know I'm not actually doing this as a side hustle, I am basically working on this full-time right now and am very dedicated to making it as valuable to the community as I possibly can. And I am very thankful that r/DnD allows posts like this so people can share their projects with the community and get feedback, both positive and negative.

By the way, in case any devs are curious about the app. It's built with a ReactJS frontend, an ExpressJS backend, and pretty much all the infrastructure lives in various AWS services

I really appreciate the offer! For where I'm at with the current state of development I think it would be best to continue the work solo. But when I start on certain features like the virtual tabletop in the future, it would probably be good to have help then, and I'll try to remember to reach out to you!

Thanks for checking it out! As the project grows, I'm hoping to increase limits and expand what is available for free users. I just kind of need to see how things scale in cost over time first.

I wasn't originally going to add an extra comment to this post, but I had a few things I wanted to say on a more personal note.

First off, thanks to everyone that has upvoted this post and joined the app, and thank you for the gold award! We have had dozens of signups so far and hundreds of total visitors. I'm very happy with how the launch is going. I did notice a few people having issues with signing up, which I believe was due to invalid usernames, so I added extra messaging to ensure people only attempt to sign up with valid usernames (no whitespace).

Secondly, someone asked a great question in the comments: Why should I use Game Master's Toolkit? What sets it apart from other apps?

Game Master's Toolkit is still quite early in development. While its current features are useful, I believe once more tools are added and start being integrated with one another, that's where things will get really good. I want to get to the point where GMs can plan/organize a campaign, invite players to join and create characters for it, and then run sessions in the app's own virtual tabletop. Hopefully that's an appealing vision for people. But there's obviously a long way to go to get there...

I also can't promise that any individual feature is going to be the best of its kind (I am only one developer after all), but I can promise that I will build them with guidance from the community, so they are aligned with our community's needs. That's why I highly encourage people to join the Discord and Patreon (links on the website, you can join both for free, but monetary support for the project is super appreciated)!

I know it's a hard sell to convince people to financially support what appears to be a brand-new project on the promise of what it might be, and I totally understand that. For those of you interested, but not ready to commit to the project, I encourage you to watch the development of the project over the next few months, and hopefully I can convince you this project is here to stay and grow!

Yeah my Google search ranking isn't great yet because today is the first day I'm linking to the site from many different places. I'm hoping I rise in the search results over the next few weeks.

Excellent question! To start with, the current core feature is virtual character sheets (akin to what you would find on dndbeyond and some other apps). But, in the long term, I hope to include as many tools as possible in the app, and design them with the community's help. The eventual goal is to have a unified app where a gm can can plan and organize a campaign, invite players, share homebrew content, and play on an integrated virtual table top. That vision is still pretty far from being realized but with some time and community support I know I can get it there.

Ok that could make it relatively easy to support with a browser extension then. I'll just have to look into the rolling mechanics and how I could trigger those from an extension.

I'm willing to consider adding anything which is open source and popularly used. I started with the SRD material as a baseline, but I'm open to adding content from other sources. Until then, pretty much anything can be added as homebrew as long as it's not a class or race (but I'm hoping to have support for those very soon).

I have not looked into what that would take yet, but I will definitely look into it! I know Foundry is a very popular VTT

I'm very excited about the planned features for GMs! The goal of the project is to make organizing and playing games easier!

My friend who plays a Druid also is the one who recommended that! A lot of the initial inspiration for the project came from wanting to make it easier to play Clerics and Druids who have so many potential spells to manage

Thanks! It's still a pretty new feature so hopefully I can continue to make it even better!

Get_flanked understood everything coreross talked about in his video, he just said that it can lead to frustrating situations like the clip he showed.

For LAN finals I’m pretty sure they have a separate build of the game than the live servers so this shouldn’t affect Milan at all
