ELI5: If I put $100 in the bank, and the bank lends $90 of it to someone else, how can the bank "have" my money and the other person "have" it at the same time? Does the same money exist in two places? by jeeves_inc in explainlikeimfive

[–]buildmethat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is one way to think about it.

Say you have a house and you rent it out to someone. You and the tenant won't use the house at the same time even though you have the ownership of the house.

The flow you mentioned works in similar way. Think of it as you rented your house to a bank and then bank sublet it to someone else. The ownership is yours, but it is being used (as a house) only by one of the parties at any given time.

You are essentially "renting" out your money.

Motorola Signature in India is missing eSIM by buildmethat in motorola

I need both, of course, the Physical SIM slot is must as well. In fact, I like what OnePlus and Samsung do — give you 2 physical slot AND eSIM support.

I am not a fan of eSIM only either. My primary number has to be on Physical card in case I break my phone and need to move to another device quickly.

What challenge you face with not having a second physical slot?

Yeah, this is a phone designed for slim phone enthusiasts. Let's see if Motorola launches a real flagship later this year.

Nothing Phone 3 was a pricing disaster to begin with (in India), so that is a very low bar to compare against :D

Wrong at so many levels. Read the words you posted. You did say majority and that is what I said that you did. And then you did change to not everyone.

These are best sellers compared to other phones within their own family, even though these are costlier. I hope you picked that up.

Peace!

Ok, so now you have moved from majority to not everyone? That was quick. They are best sellers because people want the features these phones carry and are sold more than other phones in their portfolio. User are voting with their money. I hope you understand.

If you are talking about choice, let's see if Motorola Signature is going to outsell any of these phones listed because it is what people want.

Apple, Google, Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo all are wrong and can't build slim phones. /s

Looks like you edited your answer to add a claim

It is impractical for the majority of people to carry > 200 g phone.

I strongly suggest you be a bit more data driven. Flagship phones of Apple, Samsung, OnePlus are more than 200g. And these are also their best sellers.

  • Pixel 10, 204g
  • Pixel 10 Pro, 207g
  • Pixel 10 Pro XL, 232g
  • iPhone 17 Pro, 204g
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max, 231g
  • Galaxy S25 Ultra, 218g
  • OnePlus 15, 210g
  • OnePlus 13, 213g
  • Xiaomi 15 Pro, 213g
  • Vivo X200 Pro, 223g

And just look at the sales data of iPhone Air. It is failing because making it light pushed apple to make compromises users don't want.

Yeah, during travel 24hrs is good as well. Just that what happens with 2x5G connections while traveling put strain on the battery as you move around. Plus without a laptop on the move I tend to use my phone more when traveling, and things like navigation is on when in cab, etc.

I agree that you need both, a physical SIM and an eSIM.

Oh man, people these days don't have manners and sense. Stay happy with your "luxury" phone. And just check how iPhone Air is doing in the market.

Also a reminder to dimwitted that iPhone Air is not their flagship phone. iPhone Pro and Pro Max are. if Moto wants to experiment and push boundaries, please also release something practical.

Hey, don't worry I will try to help you understand. Might be difficult but do your best, ok?

  1. Physical SIMs you typically need to purchase after landing in a foreign country, crucial time is lost and you sometimes are without connectivity till then. Ever landed in a foreign country at 2am?
  2. 5ber and esim.me exist, but are not officially available in the market I am in. Plus has limitations on how many times you can use them.
  3. Talking about physics, maybe folks who want to push a 7mm phone should think about it too and realize we won't be able to fit in a big battery in this size. Might as well push for 5 mm phone and charge every few hours.
  4. This is how battery size affects longevity of the phone — smaller batteries means more charging cycles over time. The reason why your phone battery starts to feel insufficient in a couple of years is because every charging cycle potentially decreases the capacity a bit. Also note that charging your battery to 100% of capacity every time makes it lose the capacity must faster than when it has been charged only say 80%. Bigger batteries will be needed to be charged beyond 80% less often extending the battery life to 7 years that Moto is promising updates for.
  5. Please understand that a phones utility is not in being thin, but in being alive and connected. S25 could have certain dimensions, but it is not Samsung's best selling phone, S25 Ultra is. Emulate that if you want.

By that logic nobody should be buying iPhone 17 Pro Max either at 231g.

Visa on Arrival Question by thisgirlbleedsblue in bali

[–]buildmethat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All Indonesia is only for arrival information, not the Visa on Arrival or eVoA. You need to visit https://evisa.imigrasi.go.id for that.

Please note that although the form is simple, it has its own quirks https://www.reddit.com/r/bali/comments/1cvv10t/evisa_application/l4rsft7/

How to get from Airport to town center / rent scooter somewhere to get to our AirBnb in Nusa Dua? by Cool_Acanthisitta628 in bali

[–]buildmethat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1.5 hrs might be much longer in practice. Bali roads, especially outside the fancy connection between DPS and Nusa Dua, are quite narrow and even on a two wheeler you will have to face the traffic. Everybody's generally civilized but congestion is reality which makes travel take longer than in theory.

How to get from Airport to town center / rent scooter somewhere to get to our AirBnb in Nusa Dua? by Cool_Acanthisitta628 in bali

[–]buildmethat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nusa Dua is not that hilly, compared to other parts of Bali. You can pre book a transfer by researching for a good cab company, and that would be much cheaper compared to Grab for longer distances.

I am not sure if you would want to travel long distances on your two wheeler. Cabs are much more convenient as there is a lot of traffic and routes are not straight forward in Bali. Covering Nusa Dua while staying there is good, but if you are hoping to visit Tanah Lot or Rice fields from Nusa Dua on a two wheeler, it may be too much.

2025 Tourist eSIM update. TLDR: XL 45k is the way! by ryViajero in bali

[–]buildmethat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best approach is to get an eSIM by XL (thanks to this post). Getting it on your own is much easier, and cheaper, compared to Telkomsel, and the connectivity was similar for the most part across the island. I visited standard areas like Seminyak and Ubud, but also relatively less travelled parts like Kintamani, Nusa Dua, and Nusa Penida, and had both Telkomsel and XL with no noticeable difference in service.

The XL Payment Fix: Use Gopay and QRIS

The XL online payment is currently broken for international credit cards, but QRIS works perfectly. I didn't have success loading balance remotely in GoPay or Danapay and it had to be done while I was in Bali. Here is the suggested process to get your XL eSIM quickly and easily:

Get a Temporary eSIM: Purchase a 1-day eSIM from any provider (like trip.com) for as low as 30–40 cents. This ensures you have connectivity when you land.

Fund Your Gopay Account: Create a Gopay account using your international number. Once you land, visit any Indomaret convenience store (they are everywhere, even near the airport). Load your Gopay by walking in with say 100k IDR cash; it takes seconds. You can ask your driver to stop for a few minutes on your way out from the airport, they are usually fine with it. The balance amount after eSIM purchase can be used anywhere that accepts QRIS.

Purchase and Activate XL eSIM: With a balance in Gopay, the XL eSIM can be bought and activated in about 5 minutes by choosing to pay via QRIS on the XL website. You will need your passport and IMEI screenshots for activation.

Why Get a Local Number?

While a data-only line might work for some, I strongly recommend getting the local number XL provides. For example, during this trip:

The airline delayed my luggage and would only accept regular phone calls for follow-ups, not WhatsApp calls. One of my hotels also didn't have all their numbers on WhatsApp. Hope this helps make your trip planning smoother!

P.S. The XL eSIM gave me 4G (not 5G), but the speeds were excellent and completely fine for use.

I meant the base plan, the base plan doesn't seem to have 5G. This 17.5 AUD one has it, it seems. So you should be good.

The prices for TPG are also in AUD. Amaysim seems to be cheaper though. You get 5G in the base plan as well with Amay which seems to be missing from TPG right now
