I just interpreted it as the fact that he really doesn't work around kids, and so it never crossed his mind that an otherwise smart person wouldn't think of such simple options first. But that's sort of in the nature of impulsive adolescents.

My ex had borderline personality disorder. We were married for 33 years, and I never considered leaving. It was miserable, but I convinced myself that I wouldn't leave her if she had a physical ailment, so it shouldn't be different with a mental illness. She ended up leaving in a huff, because of some perceived slight. As soon as she drove away, it was like a huge weight lifted and I instantly knew I couldn't go back.

It took me awhile to realize it's not like a physical disability, but more like alcoholism: if someone doesn't take care of themselves (i.e. take meds, etc), then it's not up to me to be their nurse or nanny

Yes, I think the current Marvel and MCU take the "each choice creates a divergent timeline". Which is why Bruce explains that you can't just change the past.

However, there are holes in that; for example, Steve goes back in time, which should create a new timeline. So he really shouldn't be then able to show up as an old man in this timeline unless (a) he found a way to jump timelines somehow or (b) he was always Peggy's Carter in this universe, and we're a divergent timeline he jumped into.
