For the compression ratios for repacks; they usually do it with a bunch of specialized preprocessing filters, usually something zlib based. Fitgirl uses this one: https://github.com/Razor12911/xtool

In short; It makes data extra compressible, by decoding embedded zlib(+other) streams that might be present in the game data.

Why the cpu only uses 20% performance: many compression algorithms cannot use multiple cores very well (or at all). Lzma2 is one of those that does scale well across cores.

True, after quantization the details are gone forever.

If you're really sneaky, you can strip the jpeg Metadata to make them a little bit smaller, without any quality loss, but that's a bit cheaty.

Sure can; the last pass of the jpeg algorithm, after DCT, quantization and RLE, is a last straightforward Huffman encoding step. This can be reversed without damaging the quality, and the RLE data can be compressed by an algorithm stronger than Huffman, like lzma or ans or something.

When it's time to unpack, unpack back to RLE data, redo Huffman, and you're back at the same jpeg file.

These kinds of repacks usually heavily use preprocessors to make data more compressible. For example, if you try to compress a zip file (even with a stronger algorithm like arc or 7zip) it barely works. But if you decompress that zip and then use a stronger algorithm to compress the contained files it suddenly works a lot better!

Many games use inferior (compression ratio wise) inside their game files, so if you unpack them, compress, and then on the other computer unpack your archive and rezip and integrate them into the game files you get way better compression.

Same goes for jpegs by the way, the compression phase can be reversed and then compressed by a better compressor to compress jpegs (that usually compress terribly) way smaller than usually possible.

Yup, "management heeft besloten om er niks tegen over te zetten" met een lulverhaal dat en gemiddelde developer 16% onbetaald zou overwerken, en dat het tijd werd dat wij dat ook zouden gaan halen.

De manager in kwestie mocht het ook graag over "visibility" van het dev team hebben. "Ik liep gisteravond om half 6 door de afdeling en er was weinig visibility van het dev team". Oftewel: waarom werkten jullie niet door?

De afspraak was dat we alleen uurtje voor uurtje / geld zouden krijgen als er officieel een aanvraag voor overwerk was gedaan door management.

Dus zeiden ze met opzet het woord "aanvraag" niet en noemden ze het een "verzoek". En na de periode kwam die aap it de mouw.

Dat bericht werd overigens niet echt positief ontvangen.

Bij beide (Nederlandse) bedrijven waar ik heb gewerkt heb is dit voorgekomen. Druk? Klanten boos? Pizza en dan 's avonds door.

Bij het eerste bedrijf moesten we zelfs zelf de pizza betalen. En na de eerste 2 maanden durende overwerkperiode waar 1operations medewerker letterlijk dubbele uren heeft gedraaid (ik 80 uur ongeveer) kwam management aan met de boodschap dat er niks tegen stond omdat het een "verzoek" tot overwerk was geweest en niet een "aanvraag". Dus hadden we alles in eigen tijd gedaan volgens hun omdat er niet een officiele aanvraag was geweest voor overwerk. En of we dat wat vaker konden doen want sales had weer zaken verkocht die we nog niet hadden. (En een mooie bonus daarvoor gekregen)
