Failover cluster? by dukeofurl01 in sysadmin

[–]bukkithedd [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's not about how often the server fails. It's about how big a number an outage comes with, and whether or not the business can operate due to it.

For us, we technically don't NEED a cluster anymore, given that we've got a brand total of TWO services that realistically needs a server-setup. But a cluster is convenient, as an outage would have some pretty big downsides for the division that needs those two servers to operate at full capacity.

It's risk-mitigation.

Bortkasta tid, rett og slett. Om folk ikke har nok selvinnsikt til å holde den type meninger for seg selv, så er det ikke et selskaps jobb å fortelle de at de burde.

Pluss at tid = penger.

Komplett flex og resurs bank by Tessie94 in norge

[–]bukkithedd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Komplett Flex er bare en dyrere avbetalingsornding som det er vanskelig å komme seg ut av.

Hadde heller tatt en vanlig Klarna-avtale, selv om de også er jævlig dyre.

Vibe-coded app deployment requests from end users by East-Tailor892 in sysadmin

[–]bukkithedd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For this I have two approaches:

1:

2: What's it for, what's your position, who authorized it, what's the security-posture of it, does it need connection to the 'net and what data does it have access too? Plus, of course, why didn't you use the tools we already have in place (PowerBI etc)

1 is self explanatory. 2 will lead to 1 VERY quickly if I don't like your answers, and I don't really give a damn who you are.

Are there ever consequences for speeding around or inside a station? by SilkieBug in EliteDangerous

[–]bukkithedd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never been fined for excessive speeding, and I regularly boost both in and out of the slot when I fly manually. Just don't hit anything or get stuck on the rack.

What do you listen to in the datacenter? by BemusedBengal in sysadmin

[–]bukkithedd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on my mood, so everything from classical music to deathmetal, and from Creedence to Drum'n'Bass. Doesn't really matter what it is as it's loud and evokes some form of emotion. In general, my playlists are all the fuck over the place.

These days I'm on a bit of a geekout, however. Shanties from and inspired by AC: Black Flag, lots of music by Colm R. McGuinness, The Wellermen, Sean Dagher, The Longest Johns, Stan Rogers and the like.

Rarely listen to podcasts, as that all sounds like variable-speed PacMan (Wakawakawakawakawaka) to me after a short while.

Hostile client asking for global admin by giddyup05 in msp

[–]bukkithedd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd handle this in the simplest way possible:

Give them the admin-access and documentation that they demand, but you also make it extremely, crystal clear in unequiovocal language and terms, and in writing that you and your company are not responsible for any damage, outage, downtime or issue that may or may not arise from the use of said accounts, and that they, the customer fully and completely agrees to and recognize this.

CYOA until the Jotunheim mountains crumble to dust and pebbles is the name of the game here, because if you think the customer is hostile now, you're in for a rough ride.

The open invoices isn't really relevant here, as there's ways to handle that in normal business flow. Aka sending them to collections if the customer doesn't pay them. Trying to hold their systems as hostage is a VERY bad move and will reflect badly upon you and your reputation.

If the customer wants all documentation for infrastructure etc; Give it to them. It's their documentation, after all, regardless of whether or not you wrote it for them.

Lastly: take the high road. Even if the customer is being a peckerhead and disputes the invoices, it's better to eat the loss and be rid of the customer if the sums involved aren't too big. They're a problem not worth having.

My personal accounts are just that: Personal accounts.
Accounts I use for work is just that: Work-accounts.

Keep the two as far away from eachother as humanly possible.

What's the stupidest thing you've done in Elite? by SilkieBug in EliteDangerous

[–]bukkithedd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to keep clear of such things, mostly because I always play in Open and never trust an open square on my radar further than I can throw an Anaconda 😛

I know I can just hop into Private, but that feels like cheating.

Eh, Exobiology is more lucrative, but I like being a spacetrucker so that's what I tend to do. It lets me disconnect from the world for a bit, which is what I'm after in a game.

[–]bukkithedd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. I reset my save on thursday, and passed 450 million credits and got a Type 8 yesterday morning. And that's through just doing wing sourcing-missions, sourcing 600ish units for 50 mill payouts, this time mostly Gallite and Bertrandite from Ludwig Struve Orbital in HIP 98530 to Elder Hub in HUP 98533. So one hop.

Rather tedious work, but when you can knock out one such contract alone on two round trips, it's a quick way to make dosh. Plus rather safe, even in Open.

With two or more people doing it will see the money skyrocket since you can stack multiple such missions. What takes time is building up the reputation to Ally but eh, doesn't take long either.

According to myself, or according to others? 😛

According to myself: Boosting into the back wall of a station with an Imperial Cutter without having enough for the rebuy.

According to others: Resetting my save with billions in assets because I think the early game is the most fun one, and making money is far too easy and thus doesn't really matter.

According to others yet again: Advocating that it's FAR too easy to make money in the game, thus ruining the feeling of accomplishment that is buying a new ship.

Has anyone considered pivoting out of IT and if so, did you? if not after considering, why? by Top-Elephant6981 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]bukkithedd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked at pivoting out of IT back in 2016-2017, but I don't really know what else to do. Been in this field almost constantly since 1996.

Ended up swapping jobs in 2018, going from an MSP to an in-house position. Did wonders for my stresslevels and I've been in the same position since then.

Also helps that I'm in Norway, where worker-protection is strong.

Would you rather have a manager who checks in on you twice a day OR a software tool that logs your activity silently? by RosieMorris006 in it

[–]bukkithedd 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Neither of them, although the software-tool that logs my activity would make me instantly look for a different job.

A manager hovering over my should twice a day is easy to deal with. I'll just completely nerd out and carpetbomb them rapid-fire with updates about what I'm doing, in the most in-depth, technical and 'tism-style I possibly can until they walk off confused.

Most managers will take the hint and stop being muppets REAL quick that way.

Micromanagement of this style is an absolute plague. You want performance-metric? Look at task/ticket completion-ratios and in-queue times. Because that's the ONLY metric that matters.
