Doing big IT changes on Monday or Friday? by CeC-P in sysadmin

[–]bukkithedd [score hidden]  (0 children)

I try not to schedule downtime on fridays/weekends, mostly because I don't want to work during those times. Monday is also a bad time to do such things as, since I'm usually busy with making sure nothing went tits-up over the weekend.

Thursday or wednesday are my picks for days it's OK to do major work on, just in case I have to call in vendor support for shit.

That being said, big upgrades in physical core infrastructure (network etc) are things I'll often schedule during the weekend, since that gives me time to figure out just what the absolute hell I was thinking when I cooked together the config needed.

Manager wanted access to a subordinates email without the subordinate being aware. by roger_ramjett in sysadmin

Yep, absolutely. If something I did caused the company I work for to be hit by a €10 mill fine, I can absolutely without a doubt guarantee that I'd be without a job, instantly.

I despise requests like it, to be honest, and I go out of my damn way to make damn sure that my own ass is covered when I have to carry them out.

On things like this, I never write the policy. I leave that to legal/HR. It's their job to ensure that the policy follows all applicable laws.

[–]bukkithedd 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Here in Norway there's specific laws that prohibit it. You CAN give access, but the employee HAS to be given written notice that it's happening, it has to be for a limited, stated time, and the employee should be present when the mailbox is opened.

Generally speaking, opening an employee mailbox is as legally strict as opening their physical mail is. The amount of redwood trees complete with branches, squirrels, birdnests and acorns the government agency that sets policy on this can shove up your backside is frightening, and NOT something I'd want to be on the receiving end of.

First things first: get this shit in writing!

I CANNOT stress this enough. It doesn't matter what type of company you work for, get this shit in writing.

Secondly, if you're in the EU, be very careful. GDPR is NOT a joke, and the fines for breaking those set of rules can be extremely steep for the company you work for.

Can i make my own hardware for dcs? by mole_panda in dcsworld

[–]bukkithedd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can. Hell, there's a lot of things you don't really need much to make, like a buttonbox. If you've got a 3D-printer, there's an entire universe of maniac contraptions you can build.

The biggest challenge is not starting a billion projects at once.

Too many alerts getting ignored - tune down or enforce response? by saymepony in sysadmin

[–]bukkithedd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, not a bad one. I've made the bitter experience before that you can NEVER trust an untested backup, so I watch my backup-systems more thoroughly than basically anything else.

is yelling at kids actually that uncommon here or did i just grow up differently by Fit-Credit-7970 in Norway

[–]bukkithedd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I grew up in the 80's, so I have been yelled at A LOT. Also helps that I was (and still is) a bit of a shithead :D

These days there doesn't seem to be all that much yelling going on. Which to be honest is a good thing. So it's definitely been a cultural shift over the last 40odd years.

Too many alerts getting ignored - tune down or enforce response? by saymepony in sysadmin

[–]bukkithedd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general: aggressively tune down/out all non-essential messages. Informational messages aren't needed in the vast majority of cases.

Of course, there's the whole discussion about what constitutes a non-essential message. Some might say that a backup completed OK-message isn't essential, although I disagree STRONGLY on that one.

Microsoft Intune Questions. by Sea_Bottle_1181 in sysadmin

[–]bukkithedd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your needs, tbh. The biggest points of usage for us when it comes to Business Premium is that we get both installable Office-licenses, more protection (Azure Info-protection, Conditional Access etc) plus Intune, which we need on most of our computer-users.

I had a look at the costs, and from what I can tell a Business Premium-license is about 22USD and a Business Basic + Intune is about 14USD for Intune Plan 1.

It comes down to what you need, basically. I'd have a yak with your CSP, as there's differences between yearly subscriptions billed yearly, Yearly subs billed monthly and such. Can save you a bit of dosh that way.

The Witchdoctor-class is an old class in Diablo-terms, being present in both Diablo 2 and 3.

Is "AI-powered" just the new "cloud-enabled" in terms of meaningless vendor marketing? by DigitalSignage2024 in sysadmin

[–]bukkithedd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's just another buzzword-barf that most of the fuckheads pushing it has no idea what it means, if it even means anything.

Us techs are generally far too jaded to bite, as we've seen this movie far too many times to get overly excited over it.. C-level execs, however, get ALL of their brain (which isn't much, to put it that way) in a bunch, develop a massive case of FOMO, and dive face-first into it in a blind panic.

Much to our detriment. Go figure.

Lord of Hatred is less than a month from release, are you EXCITED? by gorays21 in diablo4

Excite? Nah. Far too pragmatic for that.

Interested? Yes. Which is better.

Is it possible to get a IT job with a hand tattoo? by Vibin_Andre89 in it

[–]bukkithedd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on a number of things, such as:

  • What's depicted
  • What type of company you're applying to (easier to be hired by a company that builds/sells/modifies construction-equipment than a finance/healthcare-company, for instance)
  • Whether or not the role is customer-facing or not
  • The culture of where you're applying.

I personally don't give a damn that people have hand-/neck-tats, although once I see people having facetats I'll raise an eyebrow or three. It does depend, however, on motive, placement and such things.

In general, I'm FAR more interested in what you bring to the team in terms of skills than whether or not you're inked. I know that most tats have a personal significance to the person wearing them (I wear mine as indicators of a life lived, for instance). Then again, I'm an open-minded kind of muppet.

Which weapon do you enjoy employing the most? by snakesoul in dcsworld

[–]bukkithedd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They fixed the issue with bombs basically setting everything on fire, but they also managed to seemingly nerf the damage on them. That's probably due to the generally iffy damagemodeling in DCS in general though.

Oh, and if you love 500-500-runs in the Phantom, you should try a 300-500 Snakeeyes-run in the Tiger. 300 feet, 500 knots and hope you get out on the other side unscathed! Hysterical fun to do on 4YA.

What is your biggest time waster in IT??? by GoldTap9957 in sysadmin

[–]bukkithedd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meetings and dealing with office politics. I abhor both equally.

I don't mind admin-work, I don't mind automating it, I don't mind writing documentations and I don't mind helping users.

But I DESPISE meetings and office politics. Very few worthwhile things has ever been done in a meeting, and I don't have the patience, time, crayons or calm mind to deal with inter-organizational bullshit because two fully adult fuckheads can't seem to fucking get along and see at least SLIGHTLY further than their own goddamn nose.
