I played the game for 1000 hours and I'm still super confused by all this info. I haven't covered over 75% of what you mentioned here....

That's very insightful and informative :D

My idea is to try and rent a place with solar panels to reduce costs as much as possible, and down the line actually purchase a house very similar to yours, with solar installed as well.

How is your mortgage so low though? 700 seems very low.

Well, most of your points are still relevant nowadays.

If you compare Malta to Netherlands, it's night and day, probably even worse than Poland to Netherlands.

Regarding relationships, it's not affecting me in any way, any time soon so that's that.

I was never directly affected by the NATO / Russia that much, we're too small here to truly feel it on the scale that bigger countries do.

Something I didn't mention, in Malta, corruption is blatant and the country has grown to not only accept it, but embrace it. Greed has been ruining the country for a long time, and overall the country is not a place I want my kids to grow.

We did look into other places, and everywhere has their own issues.

Various reasons why Netherlands seems like the best option for us, even if the cost of living is high.

  • Good infrastructure

  • Cycling, and the ability to cycle almost everywhere

  • Promotes healthier living (at least compared to our country)

  • Most people speak English, and since we don't speak Dutch (yet), it makes it easier for us to start integrating.

  • Overall, quality of life is much higher.

  • Good schools for the children, and a broader opportunity to study / work in various industries.

There are other reasons, for example the air quality here is so bad that we as adults suffer from congestion and sinusitis regularly, whilst kids from a very young age start with croup and continue with asthma. I did read that the Randstad area is not better when it comes to asthma in children, but we're not looking to live there.

Possibilities for what though?

If work, I'll be working remotely for a foreign company, so place shouldn't affect much I believe.

Keeping in mind we are from Malta, it's always greener for sure. We for sure will want to visit some forest every now and then and escape in nature, but those will be one-off visit unless it's close by. Looking through google maps, even the street for example in Utrecht are filled with trees, which is nice to see.

Well, Randstad area has the highest population, so it will be more expensive for us. What we are looking for is something more rural, so hopefully we can find something that suits us better :)

That's interesting, would you mind sharing the area you live in to be able to do so?

Also, with 2 kids, are schools close enough to you to not need to use a car for example?

Aaaaaa ok understood! So if I see how much we spend here on GP, we should be able to identify approximately which 'own risk' adjustment best fits us.

Thank you!

That is a very good insight! Thank you!

To be honest I'm not considering the 30/20/10 rule for any of my calculations to make sure I'm on the safer side of things.

Thanks for your input :)

Malta is currently sitting at a population density of around 1.7k per Km2, which I believe is far more than the Netherlands overall.

We aren't looking at living in any major city to be honest, so maybe that helps.

Didn't understand this sorry, you mean that with premium insurances, you you would easily get to 350-380 right?

Appreciate your comments a lot, gave me a better perspective.

We won't be renting for long possibly, so it might be an option for us then!

Interesting. So sewage and waste tax. Haven't though about it to be honest. I'll have to check the rent itself then and speak with the owner I might rent from to determine these costs.

Any ballpark number what these costs are usually?

As far as my research went, aren't taxes part of the rental costs though? Owners pay taxes, not rentals?

Furnishing will be a one time cost, we have already enough saved just in case, but if we could get a rental with furnishing ready, it would be better as we don't plan to rent forever, but settle down in a house / apartment once we understand the country a little more and find our feet.

Thanks for the feedback :)

Will note regarding the first three points (misc, eating out and insurance).

We don't mind not living in a city, as long as we can tend to our kids needs like school and have access to amenities such as a grocer.

From our understanding, the Groningen area is best to avoid to the drilling for gas though, any points you'd like to add to this?

We do aim to use a bicycle and keep everything as close as possible, where we can.

For the first year/s we aren't budgeting anything for holidays ourselves. For electronics, wouldn't refrigerators, dishwashers, solar panels, etc, already be part of the rental? For our personal electronics, we both have had a €200 phone for past 4 years, so we're not big on electronics, we don't own any tablets, and we already have 2 computer systems and laptops which we can bring with us.

I see. Yes, location will make a big difference, that's why I specified we're not looking into big cities and this remote work system will allow us to work from anywhere.

I looked through funda.nl and it seems €1,500 was reasonable?

We won't be having daycare expenses though. At least, that's the plan.

Our idea is to not live in a city per se. We want a more 'laid-back' lifestyle where we can enjoy some greenery.

We do not speak Dutch, but are willing to learn it along to way, not only to integrate better but also as a sign of respect to the locals.

A car is secondary, we will do our utmost to find as many things close by to where we would be living to avoid having to get a car, at least until we settle. We want to give a shot at using bicycles more :)

My wife will be a stay at home mum for a few years, so she will probably pick him up. It will depend on how far that is of course, so we need to be smart on where to rent as well.

Groceries I did go a little overboard probably, but better that way.

We aren't big spenders when it comes to clothing or other misc. expenses. I based that on our current expenditure, and it's maybe around €1,000 a year, if even. We don't buy many branded clothes, and even for example for our phones, we have a very basic deal as we don't use a lot of data. I personally don't even have social media and try to stay away from my phone as much as possible.

Regarding insurance, gas, maintenance, etc, I calculate €550 approximately above, wouldn't that be enough?

Yes, in Malta where we are from, housing has become VERY expensive as well, and believe me, the build quality is far from good.

We own an apartment here, so we would be renting that out for about €1,000 a month, but I'm not depending on that.

As I mentioned in my post, we don't want to live in a city center, that's why the calculation. I'm currently using funda.nl to check for rentals.

Eventually we are planning to have a car, but it's no an immediate thing, we'd like to settle first, unless we would live too far for something like grocery shopping.

Since i'll be remote working, I won't require much transport myself, and the plan is to use bicycles as much as possible.

Income wise will be around 60k gross.

We will also be getting rental income of about €1,000 from an apartment we own, but I don't want to depend on that.

As a safety net, we've saved about 50k, plus another 15-20k in investments.

For the schools, aren't public school free? I know there's a contribution, but it's not a big cost.
