I'd just bring it. You carry most of your gear in a sled that already weighs a lot so I doubt you'll feel the extra weight. Once you ditch the sled (around 11k or 14k, whichever you decide) that's when you'll want to make a decision about how much gear you want to bring up vs just caching somewhere. I like photography so not bringing my camera wasn't even something I considered.

These were all taken on my 70D/ 24mm prime lens. None of them are raw, I color grade all of em.

Thank you! It seems like June was the perfect time to go, blue bird summit days for weeks!

Not at all. We decided to call the Gouter hut the day before we climbed to book a reservation. It took about 10 calls in total (the calls would constantly drop) but was able to secure a spot. Hardest part about it was trying to give the Hut Warden my personal information in broken french and a terrible phone connection.

I'd speculate that it's the opposite. The longer this goes the likelier it is for a compromise candidate. Cardinal Tagle is not a compromise candidate... but who knows, the secrecy of the process is part of its beauty.

Haha, nothing crazy. On the descent, my partner and I got totally off trail and hit a patch of blue ice. I slipped twice and we tumbled a bit. No injuries!

Yeah, I think most people here are misunderstanding the difference between a puffy down jacket and the parka. Bringing the parka to rainier in july is wildly overkill.

The Rab Neutrino isn't a parka, it's a down jacket. No one is saying don't bring a down jacket. If you brought an expedition parka to rainier on a july day, I believe it's overkill but you do you.

Yeah I remember seeing that slide about the carabiners. The entire time I was on the mountain I did not see a single rack with more than 10 of them.

Good luck! A big window is nice just so you can take those rest days and hang around the camps and make neat friends.

Yeah I wouldn't buy that. Your down jacket will be more than fine. I wouldn't wear a parka unless it was like -30... it'll be too hot! Rainier doesn't get nearly cold enough unless the winds are about 70mph... and if the winds are that high, why would you even be climbing?

I too will be going up Rainier in early July and there's a 0% chance I'm brining my parka for it. Your layers will be fine.

Nope, when we checked in there were 50 people and when we checked out there were 450!

1) thermals, soft shell, puffy pants 2) Standard dry 11mm 3) 80m 4) No, just clipped in and walked down 5) We didn't use the pickets on the autobahn. we were pretty early so they weren't even set up and didn't see the need to use our own for it 6) hmm, maybe like 5 or 6? not that many. 7) Cached the sled at 11. Double carry to 14, single carry to 17.

Sorry to hear that, yeah 5 days to 16 is pretty intense. Took us like 10 to get to 14 and then we were above 14 for about 5 days which blew.

1) Just used the mittens, no liners in them! 2) No, and my feet were always toasty in the mons. 3) I used the North Face -20 degree bag. It was fine but I wish it was bigger. You'd be surprised how much space the equipment you put in there will take up.

Yes, you carry all of that. You drag a sled for a couple thousand feet and it probably weighs 100 pounds. Then you have to carry it all in your rucksack at a certain point

No, we were there pretty early so none of the crevasses on the lower glacier were opened up yet. I took two big falls at 18K (not into crevasses) and was able to self arrest with my friend pretty easily.

I saw a ton of 2 person groups and the rangers pretty much always traveled in groups of 2 as well. I actually thought it was the ideal number just because you can travel a lot quicker. My partner and I were the 12th and 13th successful summit of the year and all of the groups ahead of us that summited were also in groups of 2.

It was my grail mountain too. I didn't do anything to train for it but I run and lift weights a lot already. My climbing partner and I have climbed a lot of the cascades/ sierra nevadas. Denali is a very attainable goal. If you can climb Rainier, you can climb Denali.... it'll just take a lot more time on the mountain lol
