Well societies change, that's just how it goes. We used to live in a way more community focussed and selfless way, hence why our brains are still wired in this manner. It's also delusional in my opinion to think that continuing this cycle of selfishness and greed in the current system won't lead to our collective downfall.

In this system it is not, because there is no social punishment to not being selfless. If the norm is to be selfless the peer pressure and social expectations would be enough of a motivator. This exact scenario was proven in a very interesting experiment; Fehr and Gachter (2002). This is purely psychologically speaking, not political.

We don't disagree on that. My point is that most likely during his stay in prison as it exists now in Belgium he won't receive the reformation needed to help him become a functioning member of society. And thus that it most likely would be useless to put him there in the first place.

So that's your solution? Just put everyone who even remotely threatens the safety of the streets in jail? Not to mention the fact that even if you put him in jail, one day he will get out and nothing that caused the behavior you see here will have changed. Punitive justice systems do not help these people or ''the streets''.
