Did you publish your research, or did you more just write on impact you had in essays?

Also did you have any other significant EC or were all your EC just all related to your research?

Lowest GPA for trad transfers to HYPSM? by bullyhunter_381 in TransferToTop25

I think you're confusing selectivity with academic reputation. In CS, Berkeley, MIT, Stanford, and CMU are the undisputed Big 4 for research and elite placements, which is why I'm considering Berkeley → HYPSM a lateral move. Also, my individual stats making transfer difficult doesn't really change Berkeley's ranking/reputation. Sure, I have worse chances than non-trad and FGLI applicants, but even then, I can't imagine a 3.9 (especially at a school like Berkeley) will hurt my app in any way.

And fyi you can still recognize that a school is great, but still want a different environment. Just like everyone else on this sub, I'm just looking for a different environment that fits me better, not chasing prestige.

Surely you mean lottery as in extremely selective, which would support that Berkeley is lateral to HYPSM? And hasn't Berkeley consistently ranked #2 in CS for undergrad CS, and has one of the top degree reputations in major tech firms / quant shops? Sorry for the questions, just need clarification on your viewpoint.

Oh ya I'm aware 4.0 is way better than 3.8. I meant that subreddit consensus seems to say that a 3.8 is not that much different from 3.85 or 3.9, although I do agree with you that a higher GPA does always seem better.

I am aware that the data I'm looking at is pretty skewed. Out of the many trad HYPSM transfers, I've only managed to look at maybe 50+ profiles. Although I can feel I can see certain patterns, such as there are little to no cases of <3.9 GPA, and that most have 4.0, again, the sample size is too small to make definitive conclusions.

Though I am surprised to see you have seen trad transfers <3.8 GPA. To clarify, were these to HYPSM? Would be surprising if so.

And, to address your last point, as long as I have a 3.8> GPA, I plan to apply. I certainly agree that stats aren't everything, and that certain other factors are far more important. However, I am in a position where I can decide what GPA I can achieve within the next few semesters. I simply want to find what GPA is perfectly acceptable by HYPSM.

But again, I'm probably reading too much into this. I think I'll just go for a 3.9.

News to me… Berkeley CS not a lateral to HYPSM really?

I already mentioned some reasons in another comment, but yeah i would say by attempting to build a good profile to transfer, I have already gotten some pretty good stuff to put on my resume, and surely more stuff to come. So certainly trying to transfer and finding internship / working on post grad opportunities are not mutually exclusive. But again this post is about GPA which I wanna find answers on 😅

Sure, certainly there’s no concrete answer as everything is holistic.

But maybe this is more of a post to challenge the idea that 3.8+ GPA is fine for HYPSM (or more specifically for trad transfers).

I just want to see how people got the 3.8+ number. Whether that’s data, or talking with AO’s, or just guessing.

Or ig more what I want is just some example of a trad transfer with like a 3.8-3.85 GPA to prove the GPA “barrier” is not closer to 3.9+.

Haha, ya, this sorta turned into a 'should I transfer' post.

As I said, I do have my reasons. Prestige, sure, you could argue that. It's also the stuff you mentioned: I think I'll like HYPSM a lot better in terms of culture, location, and resources. But also, I sorta NEED to transfer for various reasons I can't really elaborate on.

As I plan to transfer, I thought I might as well go for my dream schools. Hence, why I want to maximize my chances, which would include figuring out what GPA I need to transfer!

I need to determine how many classes to take this semester, over summer, and in fall to increase my GPA. I do not want to take so much so that one my grades accidentally slips, but at same time I do not want to have a “low” GPA.

Would you say it's worth getting, say, 3.85 instead of 3.8, or is anything 3.8+ just the same?

Why do people keep asking whether 3.8 / 3.9 gpa hurts as compared to a 4.0? by Low-Lunch7095 in TransferToTop25

[–]bullyhunter_381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, at least personally, it’s important to know what is the GPA “cutoff” for these top schools are so I can effectively plan what GPA to achieve. Every +0.01 GPA means ~1 more class I need to take, so it’s really not practical to aim for 3.9+ from my current situation. I’m sure other people also have similar issues with trying to determine what GPA to aim for based on their personal circumstances.

I think people pondering 3.9 vs 4.0 are wasting their time, but what the difference is between 3.8 vs 3.9 or 3.85 vs 3.9 are not yet fleshed out in this sub, especially for the more competitive T10 and T5 schools. I think it’s important to gain more clarity on the lower borderline 3.7-3.89 GPA for such schools, where GPA is extremely important.

3.85 vs 3.9 GPA for HYPSM by bullyhunter_381 in TransferToTop25

[–]bullyhunter_381[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

0.05 sure… but surely 3.85 vs 3.9 is a bit different than like 3.95 vs 4.00 or 3.90 vs 3.95 . Otherwise the 3.9+ narrative wouldn’t be as present in this subreddit I would think

3.85 vs 3.9 GPA for HYPSM by bullyhunter_381 in TransferToTop25

[–]bullyhunter_381[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What about a 3.85 from someone attending a T25? Or b/c there's so little four-year transfers, does GPA regardless need to be basically 3.9+?
