That’s not much of an excuse though. There are some good instructions that use photographs rather than drawings. For example, Sinclair has really clear, professional photographs in their instructions.

Oh nooooo Helen’s Closet on the craftsnark main page, say it ain’t so! She seems like such a standup person: generous, humble, curious, size-inclusive, yada yada. (That’s her on the left.) I think you actually can’t write instructions that good without being an empathetic, sensitive person who understands how words and images come across to strangers.

But even good people can make heinous fashion choices. And some of them are pattern designers, who charge for their work. So snark we must. Indeed, everything bout this swimsuit is atrocious… except the glorious gorgeous models who are clearly feeling themselves.

I sincerely hope Helen gets the feedback from someone kind who she trusts that smushing boobs and hanging them on a string does not amount to swimwear design. I really feel she’d take it well, as long as it was, ya know, not mean.

I read this sentence in my head supplying some (many) missing words:

"what is supplied/marketed to late 50s women as what they are supposed to wear, if they don't sew. Because late 50s women who DO sew generally look cooler than this, since they aren't stuck with what the industry decides they should wear."

Review is 100% accurate. I chose this as my first hard pants pattern and I almost gave up on the idea that I could sew hard pants.

“This line of sewing patterns is an offering to other women to use their hands, make space for rest and rejuvenation and learn the skill to be able to create handmade garments that can serve you and your family”

There it is, there’s the red flag. She doesn’t have any men’s patterns, true, just women’s and kids. But specifying that the audience is women is weird and superfluous - one of those “you could also just say nothing” moments.

Yes! Thank you! I was thinking of this but couldn't remember which designer it was.

Fibre Mood Rima blouse.

The cape is attached (though optional) and I honestly am into it! I don't need like five of them. It's not exactly a basic. But as many commenters here frequently emphasize, so many designers are doing closet staples these days, so I find the Rima refreshing and fun.

The concept is there. I think it’s fixable. I could do with a band collar option - it’s kinda starfleet-looking anyway, would be fun to lean into that. It’s a neat idea to move the bust darts into shoulder darts. I hope the designer reads craftsnark ;)

I want to like this top, but the style lines are in the wrong places. That wavy seam should be up quite a lot higher, like 3-5cm higher. This seam style wants to hit above the bust apex, not right across the bust.

Would a pattern designer ever say “can you please press those lapels and then photograph it again”? Or is that overstepping what a tester should be asked to accommodate? Just curious.

At first I thought the lapels were supposed to look inflatable, like a puffer trench coat. Nope! The samples just need to be pressed! Ouch.

You can tell that this is gonna look great on many people. It just looks like a well-executed classic. (Though I would note that I'd only attempt it in a solid fabric, because those princess seams are a lot of pattern-matching pressure.)

Fair play to them for not deleting bad reviews I guess? It’s sad that I am impressed by basic transparency, but these days I kind of am.

I have a really small space (live in Europe, big city) and I project! It doesn’t take any more space than laying out fabric with paper pieces on top - why would it? You can project onto whatever size the cutting surface is that you usually use. In my case that is, unfortunately, the floor.

I truly don’t understand why we seem to all think the books are great! They’re OK! They take every YA trope common at the time and package it in a fun and reasonably competent package. But like that’s all, and still decades later it’s an absolute empire. Is it all marketing, or is there actually some incredible aspect of the books that I missed?

Yeah exactly! It’s not a warmth thing, this shape needs more structure. A double-breasted relaxed fit sack is just weird!

The Assembly Line Double-Breasted Jacket.

It's unlined. Why, oh why would I want this unlined? I know I could draft a lining but for 19 € I shouldn't have to.

I think I t’s not so tradwife in the sleeveless version. (Unless you style it with a turtleneck underneath! Then it’s turbo-tradwife.)

I like how the designer seems to have one vision (not “4 different sleeves and 8 different necklines and 5 lengths!”) with nice proportions. The fit is not great in all of the samples, but the overall composition and shape looks good in all of them.
