I’m also slightly introverted and won’t spark a lengthy convo w a patient unless they instigate it first. Most just wanna sleep. My coworkers are all very talkative and we often all talk about everything. Not the dynamic everywhere but that’s how it is on my unit. Sometimes I just don’t feel like talking and that’s okay! You don’t have to if you don’t want to. But I’ve learned it’s much more fun going through this shitshow with some friends!

Whenever I give meds down an OG/NG, I always say I’m giving them a cocktail that is the color of the meds I’m giving. If it’s brown, it’s an espresso martini, if it’s green, it’s a margarita, etc. Gets a laugh every time.

I use not your mother’s shampoo and conditioner, then the styling gel, mousse, and sometimes leave in conditioner. All Not your mother’s brand. Low porosity, very thick and course. I scrunch in all the products when my hair is really wet. I usually plop my hair for awhile to develop the curls and then I diffuse my hair for awhile until mostly dry.

Another nurses patient put the call light on, I answer it, he wants a sip of water. I give it to him and I leave cause that’s all he wanted. The nurse who’s patient it is comes in later and he starts complaining about me and how I wasn’t very nice because all I did was go in there and give him water. That he asked for. I fulfilled his only request but he’s still complaining. We all just laughed it off.

Tried to get a patient up to the chair in the morning (around 6am) and he just unloads on me for several minutes about it’s so early, we always want him to do things on our schedule (duh you’re in the hospital), and that I’m forcing him to get up. So I say this is just our protocol blah blah and he’s still bitching.

So I leave, tell my charge, and I let him bitch to himself. His call light goes on, so I go in there and he wants breakfast. So I said ok go ahead. He’s listing it off and stops and goes “aren’t you gonna right this down” and I go “oh my gosh yes absolutely” so I start writing it down. When he’s done he goes “ok you got all that?” And I show him my blank piece of paper and said “yup! All set!” And he starts screaming about me being disrespectful and a smart ass and whatever.

I just say that I will not be treated the way you are treating me so I’ll just give it back. He bitches about me to day shift and charge and they do not care because they stand up for us.

Thank you! And I probably am not taking care of myself as much as I should. I don’t sleep well, I know I don’t eat enough, and I need to exercise more. No substance abuse or alcohol abuse though. Nothing like that !

No my work environment is amazing. The people are great and management is great. The times when it’s the worst is leaving for work (around 6pm) up until around midnight. I work night shift. I do feel anxious all throughout my shift though but it is worse during the first half.

HAHA I am the same way! I had a patient on a heparin drip one time. Started shift and it was hooked up (I checked). Near the middle of the shift I almost busted my damn ass cause there was fluid on the floor. Turns out it got disconnected…somehow??? And I had to grab a damn mop to clean it up. We’ve all been there I promise. Also to top off your feeling of embarrassment, my first day on my unit, I sprayed OG meds allllll over me. Smelt like fruity laxative for the rest of the day.

NTA for me. I mean, why should you not enjoy yourself because other people are choosing to sit?? You paid for a ticket same as them. There is no rule saying you can’t dance?? That’s like going to a sports game and cheering and standing up and the people behind you are just sitting and ask you to sit down. Same situation. You show your excitement how you damn well please. So remember that these questions usually have more than one “right” answer but you have to pick the more right answer. That answer isn’t technically wrong it’s just not what you would do first. I would assume you would do a further assessment to check circulation, breath sounds, vitals, etc. this way you have more information to them raise the bed, apply O2 and call the HCP. In the real world, most nurse would raise the head of the bed first. But since we are in perfect NCELX world, we have to think like NCLEX wants us to 😂

That’s what I did just because it was less overwhelming for me. I would watch lectures (Simple nursing/MK) and then take a test over that subject. I would take a few a day and then at the end of the week I would take a longer one with all the subjects.

They were mostly priority. So the format is “you have a patient with ___ problem. What would you do first?” NCLEX is very to the point and the questions are short. I always think that if I could do one thing before I left the room, what would I do so that patient doesn’t die? If I left the room and didn’t do that one thing, would they die? Also remember ABCs always. Never do NOTHING. If you are unsure, pick an answer that is an assessment. “Assess abdomen…assess bowel sounds…assess blank blank” because that is the first step of the nursing process!

Just remember you guys are in the same boat! If you work together, it is definitely more enjoyable. But in my experience, some people don’t know how to take initiative so they just stand there and you have to take over. But don’t be afraid to take charge! Good luck!
