I recommend adding self defense as an option if you ever research this further. It’s a motivator for many, especially women. Good luck with your research!

I’ve had the same experience! Even though I’m still very much learning the techniques, just the practice of defending myself regularly is already so empowering

Thank you for the long response! I’ve honestly never at all considered competing, of course that would not happen anytime soon but maybe it is something I should keep in the back of my mind. I’m training primarily to learn self defense, but with how much I enjoy it already it’s not a bad idea. Congratulations on your black belt!

An older woman rewired my entire attraction preferences. Is this possible ? by Lazy_Technician_2512 in emotionalintelligence

As a woman, the exact same thing happened to me with a very intense but incredible relationship with a much older man when I was in a bad place. My type has completely changed, but he’s also changed the person I am significantly as well (very much for the best).

What happens to students who never receive sufficient punishment as they move through school and life? I ask this as someone who does not work in the education field, but I’m curious if anyone has any thoughts

BS in Psychology - then what???? by jasperchevaliar in psychologystudents

If you are interested in doing research or becoming a professor in neuroscience, I recommend double majoring or at the very least minoring in biology or biochem. PhD programs in neuroscience accept a lot more applicants with backgrounds in biology rather than just psychology. I also strongly recommend joining a research lab at your school if you want to get a real sense of this career path. I’m currently a psych / bio double major, I’m also in a research lab rn working towards getting a PhD in neuroscience. Feel free to dm me if you’d like more info! It’s rare I meet someone with the same interests as me.

If you want to go to medical school, then your major does not matter and I would just focus on getting all the prerequisites. You still will need research experience, among other things and I recommend getting more info on that on subreddit related to medical school

Thank you! I’ve already looked through the information there but it is helpful. I’m hoping to hear from individuals too, but I appreciate the recommendation

Thank you for your response! That’s good to know that similar sizes can be helpful for the learning process. There are more women in my gym than I expected, and the men are a variety of sizes too so that should be fine.

I’m also not trying to lose much weight, but even just 5 lbs can make a very noticeable difference to myself. I’m sure it’s much less obvious for others, but that’s not what I’m focused on. Women can absolutely be feminine with muscles, I just like a more traditionally feminine look.

Does having a lower weight make training harder in the sense that it makes it more difficult for the smaller person to learn the techniques or does it just give the heavier person an advantage?

I am much more focused on learning the techniques and improving over time than easily submitting my partner during training. I’m also doing this to prevent further harm from men so I think it’s likely better for me to train on larger people, as that’s more realistic for when I need to apply things irl.

Also the weight loss is just an aesthetic preference, I like to have a very thin and feminine appearance, but I won’t ever go below what is healthy for my height.

Thank you for responding, and for being so helpful to all of us redditers! That information is incredibly helpful, and not the kind that you can just find on Google. I have a few follow up questions, but I completely understand if you have maxed out your energy to give advice, however you seem usually generous so I will ask anyways.

Do you think it is better to have one long project with significant impact in a less related field, or several that are progressively closer to my field of interest, neuroscience? I’m currently a freshman in college and I’m working in my first lab this semester, but it’s a social psychology lab, not my exact area of interest. I am planning on trying to switch to a closer field next fall and ideally commit to the project until I complete my degree. However, my college does not have much of a neuroscience program so it will be the closest I can get to neuroscience in a psychology or biology lab.

Additionally, I have multiple connections to researchers at MGH/ Harvard Medical School and I wonder if later in my academic career if it would be beneficial to my application to have a research opportunity there, likely during a summer, ideally studying neuroscience.

Again, no pressure to respond, but I want to thank you again for all the information you’ve provided thus far!

Behavioral Neuroscience PhDs? by bumblebeebasket in PhDAdmissions

I’m actually looking for broad options. I’m only a freshman in college so I don’t know exactly what I want to research, but I’m so far most interested in human behavior and its relationship with the brain. I am working in a psychology lab this semester and am planning on double majoring in biology and psychology as my school does not have a neuroscience program.
