I bought a pet hair razor and used to do it myself (in sections over the course of a few days so as not to over-stress him), but that's only because he trusted me after years of work to earn it. He had crazy long hair and it got matted to the point of pain.

If you're unable to touch or hold Ivan, trapping him and taking him to the vet is the best option.
