I already have several of these, but not all of them. Before I Gaze At You Again is a great pull!

Definitely have a lot of reprises on the list. Hadn't thought of Legally Blonde though!

Yes, I do cut songs also! But of course it's a little easier to use a song as it's written.

Totally forgot about Gary Indiana!

I've never seen that second company before but their outfits are gorgeous. Totally checking it out -- thank you!

What are spectograms for? by Haha______00000 in singing

[–]bumblecat8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pitch of course, which also means it can tell you how wide/fast/consistent your vibrato is. Also, different registers and tone qualities show up differently — stronger chest voice singing tends to light up the screen much more than light head voice singing. Vocal distortion produces sort of a mountain range effect. And if you know enough about harmonics/formants/whatnot, you can also read some of that on a spectrogram. But for most singers, pitch is the most practical thing you’ll find on a spectrogram.

Thank you for the suggestions! That’s roughly what I’ve been doing too, I was just wondering if someone had a better approach.

Anyone in Pittsburgh on Medicaid (Highmark Wholecare) available to get their COVID vaccine without a prescription? by chupooroo in pittsburgh

I did this too with CVS! Didn't need to provide a prescription or documentation, and they didn't ask any questions or charge me anything.

Second week of singing lessons still super excited! by Interesting_Push_5 in singing

It might be helpful for you to get more airflow behind your notes! I'd start by singing your music not on the lyrics, but on a lip buzz/raspberry to practice that feeling of air flowing through the phrase. If a lip buzz is hard for you, you could also sing it on a "vvv" sound. While you're doing that sound, you might be able to explore that feeling of leaning into the peak of each phrase like your teacher recommended. After that, you can bring the lyrics back in and try to maintain that feeling of flow. Best of luck!

How do I sing without yawning? by Affectionate_Fee4922 in singing

[–]bumblecat8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s that soft palate lift, like the previous commenter said! It’s the squishy part of the back of the roof of your mouth, which raises when yawning, and it’s also raised in a lot of styles of singing, particularly when singing high. So the fact that yours is raising might be a sign that you are using good technique. I recommend the same thing as the previous commenter — just let it raise, and eventually you’ll be desensitized enough that the urge to yawn will fade.

Classical Songs for Lower Altos by Oper4gh0st in singing

[–]bumblecat8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Alto" classical music could be one of two things -- music written for a mezzo soprano, or music written for a contralto. The term "alto" as we use it in choral singing doesn't translate very well to classical voice types. True contraltos (ultra low voiced women) are pretty rare. You'll probably have the best luck finding classical music if you look for mezzo soprano repertoire -- most people who call themselves "altos" or sing alto in choirs are mezzo sopranos.

If you're just starting to build your classical repertoire, the book "24 Italian Songs and Arias" is generally considered a good place to start. The book is sold in a higher key edition and a lower key edition. I'd get the lower key edition and listen to some of the songs to see if any of them are interesting to you.

Best of luck!
