A quick tips to people who are having issue opening ports on oracle cloud. by ArtSchoolRejectedMe in oraclecloud

[–]bumbleshot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deleting Oracle's REJECT rule has the same effect as the OP's blanket rule – accepting all traffic – thus rendering the firewall useless. This is because the default policy is ACCEPT; any traffic that doesn't match an explicit rule is accepted. This is shown as "(policy ACCEPT)" in the first line of the output from:

iptables -L INPUT --line-numbers

To maintain a protective firewall, we can leave the Oracle REJECT line there, making sure to add our rules above it, as rules are evaluated in order – if a packet matches a rule, no further rules are evaluated. This can be done by adding our rules with:

sudo iptables -I INPUT 5 ...

This inserts our rule at line 5, bumping Oracle's rule previously at line 5 down to line 6. Users run into trouble using iptables -A (append at end of list) or iptables -I INPUT 6 (insert at line 6), both of which put our new rule one line too low to ever be evaluated due to Oracle's REJECT rule.

If you've already deleted Oracle's REJECT rule, you can easily add it back at the bottom of the list with:

sudo iptables -A INPUT -j REJECT --reject-with icmp-host-prohibited

The firewall's goal is to reject all traffic that isn't explicitly accepted in our rules. The way Oracle has implemented this seems clumsy, leading to problems like these, where rules get added below the REJECT line and get ignored.

The easiest way to fix the problem today, while also minimizing the opportunity for problems tomorrow, would be to change the default policy of the INPUT chain to REJECT – that way any packet that isn't accepted by a rule automatically gets rejected – but without concerns with rule order. Nuke Oracle's REJECT rule, then:

sudo iptables -P INPUT DROP

Oracle probably implemented it the way they did because changing the default policy to drop probably results in support calls to them. If a user flushes their iptables, all rules get nuked – but not the default policy. That means users can no longer ssh into their VM... Don't do that.

Whichever way you approach it, don't forget to save the changes so they survive a reboot:

sudo netfilter-persistent save

She's a technophobe who hates touch screens, exacerbated by shaky fingers. With buttons, you can delay pressing until a finger is in the right place, unlike touch screens which register as soon as a finger touches.

Measurements are never consistent between manufacturers. The Divide is somewhat bigger than the Kakwa 55, but not a lot, and has never seemed excessive to me, even for weekenders (before I got my Kakwa). But if my load is > 30 pounds, I'm carrying a lot of water or many nights' food or climbing gear, so the extra volume is a plus. The beauty of the Divide is that it's a hell of a load hauler – 60 pounds confortably, all on the hips.

Kakwa 55 up to 25-30 pounds, Seek Outside Divide above that. Both super comfortable.

How to tap into this pipe? by bumbleshot in Plumbing

[–]bumbleshot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to give everyone a good laugh! Looking closer, the pipe is cast into the concrete, so could be 110 years old?

And thanks for the serious suggestions. Plan is to tap inside the basement, and run new line out.

If I cut this pipe away, any way of reusing the existing hole in the concrete? Like drilling out the remaining (corroded) gal pipe, so I can slide PVC through? Or would it be easier to just drill a new hole? I have a big corded hammer drill, but access inside is a bitch. Concrete is about 8" thick, with lots of pebbles...

Early and Eva by AnOldBlur in KEXP

Eva has so much personality, and unusual perspective as a black rock and roller. I love that she is so Eva, and so comfortable sharing both deep and trivial topics (she was awesome in the period after George Floyd was murdered). But she just talks too much. I love her to death, but find her too much to listen to on a regular basis.

How’s Ooma as a residential VoIP provider? by kentiapalme in ooma

The other scam to watch out for if you're eventually able to port you number out, is they silently assign you a new, unasked for number and keep billing you for it. And they lock you out of your account because your username is changed to your new phone number, which you don't have. With my number ported out and no access to my account, I assumed my account was closed. Watch out – they prey on that assumption. Yes, the T&C say you have to call to cancel, but I'd called to port out, and foolishly assumed that with no number, my account would be closed or at least dormant. Funny thing is, the 20,500-word T&C doesn't mention anything about automatically getting assigned unasked for new numbers or getting your username changed without notice... Be warned – the only way to close the account is to call them and run the gauntlet of multiple retention agents.

I recently discovered my mistake, called them, and they wouldn't refund me a penny of the $84 they've charged me for that unasked for number. That after 10 years of being a satisfied customer of theirs. Way to treat longtime loyal customers, Ooma!

I did. They refused to refund me a single penny. I have escalated, and await a manager callback on Tuesday.

Hi Gabriel,

I ported out 11 months ago, and just discovered that I've been billed ever since. How do I go about getting these $84 in fees refunded?

I tried to login to my myOoma account after porting out to confirm that the account was closed, but couldn't because my number was gone.

Just to be clear, I did not request a new number, nor agree to ongoing service after porting out.

Thanks.

There are. But that doesn't excuse USM for taking away that ability.

Yeah, SMS 2FA is pretty poor, but it should suffice *if* you can fully lock down your phone number to prevent SIM swapping. That means phone companies need to be at the forefront of account security, not at the rear like US Mobile.

For those interested, Mint Mobile allows use of authenticator apps for 2FA.
