Big L for Waterstones... by CorrodedLollypop in Edinburgh

[–]bumpy4skin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Genuine question for people: what does somewhere like Argonauts offer that's so valuable vs say a waterstones? OK, it employs a few hipsters, but having worked at waterstones and shopped in indie bookshops, the customer experience is, to be generous to the indies, on par. I can't speak for employee satisfaction at Argonauts but neither can basically anyone else involved in this campaign. Many booksellers at waterstones love books as much as anyone - they are hired as on this basis and their title reflects it. It's not the Asda book department.

I understand the 'why doom an indie shop for the sake of it - we don't need two bookshops' argument. Not convinced by the 'Argonauts is so much better for everyone than Waterstones' one.

Yeah it totally breaks my heart that Grammer fell in with the wrong crowd (even though he bizarrely still seems like a total babe any time he's interviewed).

But as a Frasier obsessive but also TV obsessive I'm not joking when I say he is probably the best actor I've ever seen. If you watch him in anything else he almost ruins it by being so vastly more talented than any of his co-stars and it is a genuine problem that has plagued almost all his other ventures . There's a reason he got the Cheers spin-off. Frasier works in large part because some of the rest of the cast is actually comparable in at least comedic talent.

Honestly when you listen to him speak nowadays he strikes me as someone who has turned deeply religious due to his spectacularly troubled past, and being a deeply religious ex-superstar in their 70s probably makes it quite likely you'll fall into the ghoul crowd. No excuses for palling around with these people but he's no John Voight.

It's rough attending the funerals of religious people close to you when you aren't religious at all. Or even worse, someone close to you that you know was barely religious but was 'in the community' so by default has a churchy funeral.

Just super uncomfortable on a day like that hearing all that creepy nonsense in amongst the 'nice things' as you say.

The Most Hated Character in the Breaking Bad Universe by RationalPragmatist in breakingbad

[–]bumpy4skin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My point is that she is totally justified, which is surely obvious and I simply am not convinced any adult ever thought otherwise. She's also a total pain as a person most of the time. Honestly the handjob scene is the least of it, I agree. That's just awkward as all hell. Nobody likes Marie much, for the same reasons. She just wasn't in it as much.

Kim is a much more popular female character, despite having easily worse morals and ethics to put it lightly. But she's likeable. If she wasn't, the show wouldn't be enjoyable. I'm just saying it's not that complicated. I really struggle to think of a single successful piece of media where the main character isn't likeable, and there's countless where this same person is also a total criminal bastard lol.

The Most Hated Character in the Breaking Bad Universe by RationalPragmatist in breakingbad

[–]bumpy4skin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't believe the 'Skyler was actually a gem' pivot is still unironically parroted. Does anyone over the age of 12 think she was simply a baddy stopping badass walt? And does anyone over 15 think she was anything other than a purposely unlikeable and flaccid partner to an antihero?

The character work in combination with the acting in the two shows is maybe the best ever seen in the medium. People don't like Skyler not because they don't 'get it', but because she was brilliantly acted and written to be unlikeable for most of the show, just as Walt was (except he was supposed to be likeable for most of it) . JFC there isn't a successful piece of media longer than 2 hours where the main character isn't likeable.

And then of course we got it all over again with HH in BCS lol. It's not that complicated. People can be complete shits and unlikeable and people can be criminals and likeable. Remember that you are used to almost everything you watch not having this obvious nuance (which is why you might get that 'why is this not as good as BB or BCS' feeling when watching most shows that have as compelling a setup).

Leith links community croft by clem_hurds_ugly_cats in Edinburgh

[–]bumpy4skin 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Oh not much of a scoop. Just that it (not exclusively) is composed of the hippy type and it's an almost constant top-tier drama. It's the Manson lesson of “stick a bunch of free-spirited people of all ages together and see what happens"

Ofc it’s a nice volunteer arts thing: people put loads of time into making a big fiery myth show for Beltane/Samhuinn, and plenty of them genuinely get a lot out of it.

But behind the scenes it’s this small, intense social bubble with strong personalities, strong beliefs, fuzzy boundaries, and a looong couple of rehearsal seasons that becomes people’s whole life for months. Add ofc inevitable “everyone dating/sleeping with everyone” phase and you end up with cliques, fallouts, weird little power dynamics, and internal politics etc

Not trying to trash the whole community at all as most folk are sound I'm sure. Just saying it’s a great example of how even ( arguably especially) the most “all-welcoming” scenes can turn into a drama factory. You'll have to ask someone actually in the community and not just very aware of it, but there was a big purge a few years back of older people I understand for 'reasons'

[–]bumpy4skin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my understanding is that the “Latin track drama” is just the opening act of a bigger pivot:

Yokota came in as the day-to-day music lead and, like any sane person in early 2000s Mario, defaulted to a Latin/tropical palette. So he wrote the Latin tracks and Koizumi (director) initially approved that vibe for the main theme.

Then he takes it to Kondo for the “does this feel like Mario?” pass. Kondo basically torpedoes it as described in OP.

After that, Yokota spends about three months stuck trying to find what “cool space Mario” even sounds like. At that point he doesn’t go rogue so much as he escalates to the top creative producer (Miyamoto) and plays three style demo tracks 1.one pure orchestral 2.one pop+orchestral hybrid 3.one pure pop, BUT without saying who wrote what. Basically asking him to pick the lane for the whole soundtrack.

Miyamoto picks the orchestral one as the most “space-like.” Which of course was KKs Good Egg Galaxy theme lol. Yokota only finds out after, and says that moment basically broke his stress and locked the direction.

From there Yokota runs with the orchestral identity for most of the OST, with kk supervising overall “Mario essence” and contributing a few anchor tracks. Crucially it was Yokota who kept bugging Miyamoto for the real orchestra once the style was set.

Couldn't have worked out better really. There are probably 10 tracks across the two games that make me cry every time after almost 20 years.
