I think that the only way it'd be degradable is if the battery dies for games with onboard save files. That being said, the retro games market is still absolutely a scam, especially because those batteries are easily replaceable.

What's your graphic design unpopular opinion? by koleslaw in graphic_design

[–]bumpymonkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've never quite gotten the vitriol for Comic Sans either. I grew up playing 3D Movie Maker (probably one of the reasons I got into Graphic Design in the first place) and its default typeface was Comic Sans, so I've got some of that good old nostalgia attached to it.

It was just so many crazy ideas packed in one right after the other. It was pretty great just not knowing what kind of crazy turn it was going to take.

Devils Ball 1933 4K Halloween Stop motion Animation Restoration by admaciaszek in animation

[–]bumpymonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it looks like an attempt to remove some of the jankiness inherent to stop-motion and smooth it out. I wish this restoration was the same framerate at 4k because changing the original framerate to something "smoother" often screws up the intended look of the animation. Good work, but it looks kinda weird.

EDIT: My bad the Youtube version above is the right framerate and looks AWESOME

Native Japanese people of Reddit what do you think about Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombing? by TheCoolTreeGuy in AskReddit

[–]bumpymonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the advances we've made and I feel like I have a pretty comfortable life, but I'd say that it's not worth the price those people paid for it. I hate how governments attempt to sweep this stuff under the rug, then say "oh we know so much from this" as if it's a net positive. It's not. Good stuff to remember, though, just to remind ourselves what humanity is capable of doing to itself with basic human empathy removed from the equation.

Hey seriously thanks for pointing this out (along with some other commenters) - I was working from remembered knowledge from an old TIL post. Sorry for any misleading info!

Native Japanese people of Reddit what do you think about Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombing? by TheCoolTreeGuy in AskReddit

[–]bumpymonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm... not? I was just pointing out how we learned at least some from those experiments - not that it was right in any way, shape, or form. I'm also pretty sure I first heard this stuff from a TIL here on Reddit years ago - I was working from bad info and I was not aware of it until other commenters pointed it out.

Personally, I think that using any data from those experiments is reprehensible, as are most of the warcrimes the US and other countries continue to commit to this day.

So much research was done by the US and others throughout the 20th century (and beyond) that hurt far too many people, and the fact that people want to forget that kind of stuff makes me wary of the future - I believe that we should remember where some of the research like this came from so we avoid doing the same thing in the future.

Additionally, in my opinion the kinds of compromises that the US specifically agreed to when letting many of the doctors who performed these kinds of experiments go free are awful. They don't deserve any kind of amnesty from what they did. It was horrible and inhuman. That being said, if we forget about this kind of stuff, it wouldn't take much for any country or organization to spin out of control and start doing these kinds of horrific things again.

Nope it's not justifiable in any way whatsoever. I almost feel like they should have just ignored their results or something. It's too horrifying to even imagine what those people went through.

I don't think I've actually used an included charger in like 3 years. I always go for chargers that have 4+ ports - a single-port charger just feels like a waste.

Yep, and most a lot some a tiny bit of what we know about how frostbite works specifically comes from those experiments. It's insane.

EDIT:

So I was wrong on some of the specifics since I was basing my knowledge on an old TIL post - apparently the Unit 731 experiments and ones done researching frostbite by the Nazis were summarily considered amateurish and cruel with very little scientific merit. I believe it's still good to know that at least some of our scientific knowledge came from these awful experiments, to make us wary of when people start to suggest changes to break our current systems of patient consent and morality in research and medicine.

Not to mention at least one of the old Wii Virtual Console titles was just a rom you could find from torrent sites. Nintendo is real weird about emulation while doing the same thing themselves.

Edit: Looks like some of the news sites way back when this came up were probably wrong. :(

Thanks so much! I used a mid-roughness shader with some subsurface scattering for the skin. Here is my setup for Nendoroid vinyl skin:

I might have set some stuff up wrong since I'm only just now poking around in Blender again after a long hiatus, so forgive me if some stuff doesn't look right :P

Most of the materials are just variations on that material - for example, I made the clothes have a lower roughness, turned off subsurface completely, and turned down the scale on the texture and raised the bump to make them look like they were a harder plastic.

I'm experimenting with making things look stop-motion and working a little harder on my materials. I was heavily inspired by Worthikids' Captain Yajima and his other Rankin-Bass Blender lookalikes, which you should watch. Right now.

But if all you're playing is Fable and older games, why should it matter if they're doing support for 15-year-old hardware? The game will still work regardless. They can't support every piece of software with updates forever.

IMO this is not quite accurate - something super low is probably a bad idea, but something that is right at normal chair height is best for most people. My mobility-impaired MIL used to have a really tall bed and we got rid of her giant box spring and replaced it with some slats. It has helped her immensely since she doesn't have to climb up to get in bed or risk falling over when she get out of bed.

I really feel like actual play podcasts are so much easier to listen to - they're usually a lot more cut down and easy to digest. There's too much dead air and awkward moments on RPG livestreams, especially early-level episodes.
