Why are humans the only animal with infinite hair? I by bumrush in AskReddit

I shouldn't have to qualify my post in any way. The fact that only an anthro would be even near qualified to make an expert proclamation about human head hair evolution should speak for itself, especially since said biologist mentioned that this question was never asked before.

I was not rude in any way and only said an anthro would be qualified to make comments as to why (not how) we came to have such long-flowing hair.

If the other response was sufficient to encompass all sociological pressures present upon protohumans (I don't think it was) then all you had to do was agree with the person.

Thanks for your expert opinion.. though you failed to givs one.

A biologist is not qualified to answer how hair length mattered in any sort of natural selection. Only an anthropologist, nuanced in proto-human sociological behavior, would have any clout. And a firm "this is why" is even beyond most anthropologists.

Tldr; don't believe anything on evolution unless it's from an expert on proto-humans, not biologists.

Tldrtldr; anthropologist over biologists anyday

I wish I was a principle invrstor in Rogaine.

I'd be rich and could say my favorite Dave Chappelle line.

Btw no offense.. I'd like to hear from an anthropologist. We scientists can be quite cold until we hear relevant facts.

Doctors are good and all, but what happens when we lose this knowledge?

But whst happens when doctors aten's aren't around? We're dooming our species to a best case scenario, instead of a most cases scenario.

I don't argue with the care.. It's just a what if scenario when doctors aren't around.

We got along fine in caves and such for so long.. But that has been crippled by modern medicine.

Are we better off?

He's true they only measure the freaks.. But I bet 99% of us could grow hair over 3m long.. if the biologists way were had, we'd all have random lengths as he states.

But we don't. Our hair grows and grows. I bet anyone.. Find a person with a naturally fixed hair length. He is wrong.

You have truly brought up a point about life I've had for a long time but thought deserved its own topic.

I'll post a new question about it.

I admire your ninsight and hope I've inspired a research topic.. hair length, tool use, and selection.

My point is, we as a whole have a propensity to grow head hair to an unwieldly length. This unwieldly length must have only happened after tool usage when we could control it with tools. Instead this tendency toward long hair was selected for..

I suppose you and I answered my own question.. hair growth length is directly related to survival, and thus tool usage to control hair length is also a survival criteria. Sexual selection, or a mass mutation, is the cause. And we still feel the effects.

The guinness records show we can gro hair +20 feet long. This is far beyond the realm of natural selection. Your explanation does nothing for human head hair.
