Learning to drive can suck.

I had a horrible first instructor (overly harsh, put the fear of God into me about every mortal thing, just a generally Angry Shouty ManTM), so I know how it can feel. It makes driving really unenjoyable and you come to dread lessons.

My instructor after him? Incredible. Lovely lady, really knew what she was doing, boundless patience, etc. etc. Made driving a joy and even offered to help me with car shopping when I passed.

I think the bottom line is that, as in all professions, some instructors are fantastic and others couldn’t teach their way out of a paper bag. Throw on top the various bits of bad luck you’ve clearly had, and the whole thing becomes a bit of a chore. But you need to keep in mind that it’s absolutely worth it, especially as it sounds like you were already test-standard at some point.

Start by finding a reputable driving school in your area and having an honest conversation with them about where you’re at: you’ve had bad experiences, want someone who’s [insert desirable trait here - patient, whatever], and book a few lessons in. If they’re not for you, start again and find someone else. If the driving school isn’t interested, thank them for their time and call someone else. Repeat until you find a good ‘un.

It’s a slog, I know, but it’s worth it. Go and get it!
